Diocese: Diocese of Corpus Christi TX

Monsignor. Ordained in Ireland. Arrived in Corpus Christi diocese in 1968, incardinated in 1975. Suit filed in 4/10 alleged Clarke molested three altar boys 1972-1975 while assigned to Christ the King in Corpus Christi. He would frequently drive through the low-income housing near the parish and pick up altar boys to help him do projects at the church. Some of the abuse occurred during these “projects.” Documents show allegations of child sexual abuse in the mid-1980s, and that he would take three teens to Mexico where there was sexual abuse, drugs, alcohol and visits to brothels.  Sent to treatment, diagnosed with pedophilia, then returned to ministry. Later elevated to monsignor.  Retired in 1997 and moved to Ireland, where he died 12/16/02. Suit settled for $1.2M 7/12/11. On Corpus Christi diocese’s list 1/31/19. Added to Raleigh diocese’s list on 5/29/19; arrived in the US as a Carmelite priest in 1965 and assigned to Immaculate Conception in Hendersonville NC, now in the Charlotte diocese. Added to Charlotte diocese’s list in 2/20.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
