Status: Accused

Diocese: Diocese of Marquette MI

Named publicly as accused by the Diocese on its list 12/13/2019. Permanently removed from ministry in 9/1993. Per the MI Attorney General’s Report in 10/2022, in 1991 a boy, age 12, told his counselor that he had been sleeping in bed with Fr. Craig. When informed, Bishop Schmitt asked the counselor to meet with Craig, who provided “damaging information” which led to a report to CPS. Craig was sent to St. Luke’s Institute and a few months later to Rogers Memorial Hospital for treatment. He attended aftercare treatment at St. Barnabas Center in WI. In 9/1993 Craig was asked to resign after the diocese’s review board learned that the boy stated that the priest touched his [the boy’s] penis during a camping trip. Bishop Garland also asked him to seek laicization. In 5/2018 Bishop Doerfler invited Craig to seek laicization and told him that he had a substantiated claim against him of sexual misconduct with a minor. In 10/2022 Craig’s status is leave of absence from the diocese.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
