Fr. Thomas F. DeVita
Confessed publicly in 1998 to a ” sexual relationship” with a 16-year-old boy in New York in 1978. The boy’s mother had confronted him in 1978. She told Auxiliary Bishop G. Ryan in 1984 and he promised intervention. The mother learned that DeVita was still active in 1993 and again went to the diocese. Diocese paid a $50K settlement to the victim in 1993. DeVita was sent for therapy. Worked in Venice, Florida and later became part of the Kalamazoo Diocese. Was working there in 2002 when removed from ministry.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
