Br. Malachy/Deacon Robert Flavin

Order: OSB
Status: Sued

Diocese: Diocese of Paterson NJ

Benedictine brother. Entered the order at St. Mary’s Abbey in Morristown NJ in 1974. Professed solemn vows in 1978. Ordained for the permanent diaconate in 1982; remained a Benedictine monk. Delbarton School teacher 1975-1987. In 1992 a former Delbarton student told the Benedictines that Flavin sexually assaulted him six months after graduation 1981. In 2002 the former student also alleged that Flavin said inappropriate things to him as a student in 1978, and that the Order knew of another victim. Per the Order, Flavin left active status in 1987 after he was found drinking with another boy. He continued to work as a part-time deacon at a Randolph Township parish for ten years. When Flavin would not voluntarily leave the Order, in 2003 it asked the Vatican for laicization. Named in lawsuit(s) filed in 7/2020 under the NJ Child Sexual Abuse Victims Act.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
