Fr. Joseph Dale Ryan
Retired in 2005. Named publicly as accused in the MI Attorney General’s 6/25/2026 Diocese of Saginaw Report. In 2005 a woman told the Diocese that she was sexually abused by Ryan 1971-1979, beginning when she was age 8 or 9. He was assigned to St. Anne’s in Linwood MI during the time in question. Ryan was a close family friend. The woman said that the abuse would occur during visits to their home, with her parents in another room. She said Ryan also abused her sister and her sister’s friend. Ryan would allegedly touch the girls under their blouses. Her sister confirmed the allegations. Ryan was placed on leave in 1/2007. Bishop Carlson closed the investigation in 1/2008, after determining that the allegations could not be substantiated. Ryan died 4/21/2009.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
