Fr. Lawrence Hecker

First named publicly as accused on the archdiocese’s list 11/2/18. It notes an allegation received in 1996 of abuse in the late 1960s and the 1970s. Removed from ministry in 2002. Accused in a 4/19 lawsuit of fondling a group of boys at St. Joseph’s in Gretna in 1968. On the Baton Rouge diocese’s list in early 2019. Per attorneys, Hecker was a serial pedophile who abused “countless” children, and the archdiocese knew for decades. The church acknowledged in 3/20 that there had been settlements in four cases involving Hecker, and said it first received an allegation in 1988. Reportedly laicized in 2018. Subject of FBI investigation in 2022.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
