Left active ministry in 1987. Arrested in 1992 for sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy. Diocese paid for Hemstreet’s treatment at St. Luke’s. Sentenced to 90 days in jail in 1993. Per the diocese, he left ministry without requesting laicization. Hemstreet, an “admitted alcoholic, convicted child molester and former boy scout leader, ” was active in protesting the Boy Scouts’ policy of not accepting homosexual leaders. Absent on leave per 1988, 1990 and 1995 Catholic Directories. Died in 2007.
