Fr. Martin James Hoogterp
Died in 1998. Named publicly as accused in the MI Attorney General’s 12/15/2025 Diocese of Grand Rapids Report. In 8/2004 a woman reported to the Diocese that when she was a young teenager 1979-1980 she was sexually abused by Hoogterp at Sacred Heart in Muskegon. She said the abuse included oral sex and intercourse and that he silenced her with threats. The Diocesan Review Board noted in 2004 that there were other allegations, “probably involving a married woman.”

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
