Ordained: 1986
Status: Settled

Diocese: Archdiocese of St. Louis MO

Deacon. Named publicly as accused by the archdiocese on its list 7/26/19. Allegations substantiated. Removed from ministry. Laicized. Accused of molesting a 17-year-old boy he had met at Teens Encounter Christ retreat in 1993. The abuse allegedly occurred during a week the boy spent “shadowing” Hummel, which his parents had arranged. The boy filed a lawsuit, settled two years later for $80K. Hummel reportedly continued to work at a parish until 2002; the archdiocese said he had been removed from ministry in 1993. Worked for the archdiocese “away from the public” until retiring in 2014.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
