Br. John Kelly

A former St. John’s Prep student accused Kelly of sexually abusing him over a 3-year period. In 1982 the student told the school’s counselor, who told the abbot. A lawsuit was filed in 1992 and settled in 7/1993. As of 2002 Kelly had taken a leave of absence from the brotherhood. A 4/2002 article referred to the allegations as credible and said that he acknowledged wrongdoing and sought treatment. Named in new suit in 12/2009. Name on a list of monks likely to have offended against minors released by the Abbey 12/9/2013. Kelly was no longer a St. John’s monk.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
