Fr. Hugh J. Lang

Ordained: 1956
Status: Charges dropped

Diocese: Diocese of Pittsburgh PA

Retired in 2006. Former pastor of St. Therese of Lisieux in Munhall and superintendent of diocesan schools. Placed on leave after allegation to the diocese 8/27/2018 that he sexually abused an 11-year-old altar boy in 2001. His accuser said Lang took him alone to a room in the church basement, told him he was a troublemaker and to take off his clothes, then performed sex acts on him. He said the priest then took a photo of him and said he would show it to others if he didn’t behave. Lang denied the allegation. Arrested 1/25/2019. Found guilty at trial 11/2019. Sentenced in 2/2020 to 9 to 23 months and 29 days in prison. On 3/5/2020 the sentence was vacated. Lang’s conviction was overturned 3/9/2020 when a new judge determined that Lang’s due process had been violated. He was to get a new trial. The D.A. filed an appeal. Charges dropped in 8/2022, in the “best interest of the alleged victim.” In 10/2022 the diocese’s list shows Lang’s status as “faculties restricted/canonical case pending.”

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
