Fr. Robert J. McIntyre

Ordained: 1963
Status: Sued

Died: 6/23/2020
Diocese: Diocese of Providence RI

“Fr. Mac.” At least two civil lawsuits filed in 1992 and 1993 named McIntyre as responsible for covering up abuse at the RI Catholic orphanage, St. Aloysius Home, and conspiring to prevent proper reporting procedures. In 9/1993 a man told the Diocese that McIntyre and a DCYF employee sexually abused him at the home when he was 15 in 1987. McIntyre was assigned to St. Aloysius Home 1971; he was director from 1978 until the home closed in 1994 after publicity of the sexual abuse of children in its care. He was removed from ministry and soon got a job with a human services agency in New Bedford MA,. In 1997 he became Director of Residential Services in Worcester MA for 10 sites for at-risk children and youth. In 1996 a former St. Aloysius resident alleged in a lawsuit that McIntyre participated in his sexual abuse; in a civil trial in 1999 the jury found no evidence to support the charges. In 2000 McIntyre retired and took a part-time job in Providence RI at a social services agency. In 2003 another former resident, who alleged he was abused at the home by a priest and staff in the 1980s, asked the Diocese for a settlement. It was denied. In 2010 the man identified the abusive priest as McIntyre. In 2007 a man reported abuse by McIntyre at age 13 in about 1986; no prosecution due to the statute of limitations. Included 7/1/2019 on the Diocese’s list of credibly accused. McIntyre moved to FL after the list was published. Another former St. Aloysius resident reported in 10/2019 that McIntyre sexually abused him between 1968 and 1975. In 2/2020 a man alleged abuse by McIntyre over several years at St. Aloysius, beginning in the early 1980s when he was 9 and had gone to the priest to confront him for sexually abusing his 5-year-old brother. Also in 2/2020 two more men reported sexual abuse by McIntyre at St. Aloysius, one saying he was raped at age 10; the other alleged abuse from ages 8- or 9-11 in the late 1970s-1980s. In 3/2020 a man alleged abuse ages 9-16 and said that McIntyre had photographs of boys in diapers. McIntyre died 6/23/2020. Two more former residents came forward, in 12/2020 and in 7/2021. Included in the 3/4/2026 RI Attorney General’s Report, which shows that between 1993 and 2021 the Diocese received a dozen child sexual abuse allegations against McIntyre. The abuse included oral sex, and rape, pornography, and forcing children to sexually abuse each other.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
