Fr. James Aloysius Mulvey

Ordained: 1905
Status: Accused

Died: 11/7/1959
Diocese: Diocese of Saginaw MI

Ordained in 1905 for the Diocese of Grand Rapids; became a priest of the Diocese of Saginaw when it was established in 1938. Died 11/7/1959. Named publicly as credibly accused by the Saginaw diocese on its list 4/10/2019. Included in the MI Attorney General’s 6/25/2026 Diocese of Saginaw Report, which reveals that in 2018 a woman reported to the Saginaw diocese that Mulvey molested her and another girl when they were grade-schoolers at St. Boniface in Bay City, where Mulvey was pastor 1942-1959. The girls were helping Mulvey with the Sunday collection at the rectory when he allegedly had them sit in his lap and then fondled their breasts. The woman said that she later told the other girl’s father, who went to the rectory and confronted Mulvey. Nothing further was done.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
