Fr. Timothy M. Murphy
In 1999 a man alleged sexual abuse by Murphy at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in around 1970 when he was age 12. The boy had been hired to work at the rectory. He quit the job after about a year and tried to run away from home. Murphy went on “Leave of Absence for Health Reasons” 1972-1978, during which time worked in southern CA, including as a high school teacher, while living in parish rectories and a monastery. During 1988-1991 he was assigned in Victoria, TX, after which he returned to MD. He wrote his victim a letter of apology in 1993. In 1999 the Archdiocese of Baltimore informed the Trinitarians of the allegation; Murphy’s faculties were removed. Sent to Southdown Institute in Canada. Limited in Baltimore to work in the Province Offices. His name appeared on Baltimore’s 9/2002 list of accused priests. Murphy died in 2004. The Archdiocese and Trinitarians settled with the victim in 2008 for $42,500. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General’s Report.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
