Fr. Jeffrey David Newell

Ordained: 1990
Status: Sued

Diocese: Archdiocese of Los Angeles CA

German. Also known as Jeffrey David Newell Lambert. In 1991 a young man told the Archdiocese that he had been abused for years by Newell from age 15 in 1986, beginning when Newell was a lay youth minister, prior to ordination. The Archdiocese promised that Newell would never work in youth ministry again. Newell was removed from ministry “for other reasons” in 1993. Admitted the abuse, sent to treatment in MD. Found in 2010 working with children as a priest in Tijuana, Mexico. Accuser filed suit in 6/2010 accusing the L.A. Archdiocese of fraud. One of seven priests of the Tijuana, Mexico Archdiocese who were removed without privileges as of 6/20/2014. Case sent to the Vatican. Found by a reporter in 11/2019 working as pastor of a Tijuana parish. Suit filed by a second man in 2/2020 in CA alleging abuse as a young teen by Newell, beginning in 1993. As of 3/2022, Newell was still listed on the Tijuana Archdiocese website, as the pastor of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion in Tijuana. As of 5/2023, he was no longer listed with the parish but seemed to still be in active ministry; he was named on the archdiocesan website as the diocesan contact for a charismatic group, Comunidades Católicas Carismáticas de Alianza, and for Koinonia, the archdiocesan radio station that he founded in 2010.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
