Fr. William Pitcavage

Order: SCJ
Ordained: 1976
Status: Sued

Died: 03/22/2019
Diocese: Diocese of Sioux Falls SD

Missionary in Lesotho and the Republic of South Africa for 20 years. Also worked in SD and WI. Elected vice provincial of the Order in 2010. Placed on leave after allegations in a SD civil suit that he had abused children at a Native American School in the 1970s. No previous allegations. The Order said the charges were “not credible” in 2/011 and returned Pitcavage to ministry. A later statement by the Order said that the allegation was actually “unsubstantiated.” The SD Supreme Court ruled that the lawsuit could go forward in 1/2012. He died 3/22/2019.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
