Fr. Edward Poettgen

Ordained: 1980
Status: Sued

Diocese: Diocese of Orange CA

Accused in a lawsuit filed in 6/19 of molesting a boy, age 6, while assigned to a St. Polycarp in Stanton in 1994. The boy was a student at the parish school. Poettgen’s accuser first came forward in 1/19; parishioners were not informed. The diocese said Poettgen was placed on administrative leave at some point before 1/29/20, although a plaintiff’s attorney stated in late 1/20 that Poettgen told him he was still in active ministry as pastor of St. Boniface in Anaheim.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
