Fr. Joseph E. Shaw
Monsignor. Parish priest; teacher and vice-rector of St. Joseph Seminary; head of the Diocesan Tribunal 1946-1975; St. Gertrude Convent chaplain 1966-1983. Named publicly as accused in the MI Attorney General’s 12/15/2025 Diocese of Grand Rapids Report. Died in 1987. (The AG Report has an erroneous death date.) In 2006 a man told the Diocese that when he was a minor seminary student he was touched inappropriately by Shaw. In 2018 another man told the Attorney General’s office that Shaw sexually abused him when he was a St. Joseph’s Seminary student 1963-1966, ages 13-15. He said that Shaw would watch the boys shower every day, and that he was singled out by Shaw.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
