Ordained: 1971
Status: Reinstated

Diocese: Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston TX

Auxiliary Bishop and Chancellor. In 6/19 someone sent letters to the archdiocese claiming that Sheltz molested her in 1971, when she was a minor. She did not include contact information, but did give a name that the archdiocese said they could not find. The letter-writer also expressed anger that the archdiocese was going to transfer her pastor, Rev. Hai Dang, to another parish. She said if the transfer occurred, she would go public with her accusation. The archdiocese stated its belief that the claims were false, but did report it to police and Children’s Protective Services, as well as the Apostolic Nuncio to the U.S. In 10/19 the archdiocese announced that the Vatican found the allegation to be “manifestly unfounded.” Sheltz was returned to ministry.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
