Accused in a 9/02 civil suit of sexually abusing a 10- year-old boy in the late 1990s. Smith was chaplain at a nursing home owned by the Archdiocese of Miami, where the boy’s grandmother was a resident. Settled in 2003 for $500K. Also accusations of inappropriate contact with boys in the 1970s. Sent for therapy. Arrested in 6/04 and charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious assault. Convicted in 12/04 of abuse from 2002. Sentenced to two years house arrest and eight years probation.
