Excavation of almost 800 bodies from the former mother and baby home has proven divisive, but the infants deserve Christian burials

British MPs passed a law last month to decriminalise women in England and Wales who terminate their pregnancies after 24 weeks, potentially up to full term.

The landslide vote in the House of Commons was prompted by cases such as that of Nicola Packer, who was prosecuted for taking medication to induce an abortion at 26 weeks.

Packer, now 45, claimed she thought she was only six weeks pregnant when she took the medication in 2020, after which her stillborn baby was delivered. She was acquitted in May.

I’m using the word “baby” rather than “foetus”, uncomfortable as some may find that language, because nobody in the UK ever dreamt of referring to the 23-week gestation baby that nurse Lucy Letby was convicted of attempting to murder as a foetus.

Federal Court temporarily blocked the state from enforcing the law that required clergy report child abuse by breaking the seal of confession.

A federal judge has halted a Washington state law that required Catholic priests to break the seal of confession.

The law that was passed in May, and was slated to go into effect on July 27, mandated that clergy must report child abuse or neglect when it was disclosed to them during confession.

“There is no question that SB 5375 burdens Plaintiffs’ free exercise of religion,” wrote Judge David G. Estudillo.

When clergy learn about child abuse or neglect in confession, the law “places them in the position of either complying with the requirements of their faith or violating the law,” the ruling said. The Trump administration secured a victory for the confidentiality of the confessional booth as a federal judge temporarily blocked a recently-enacted anti-child abuse statute in Washington state.

In a 25-page order, U.S. District Judge David G. Estudillo, a Joe Biden appointee, issued a preliminary injunction that keeps mandatory reporting legislation passed this year from going into effect. Absent the court’s order, SB 5375 would have become operative on July 27.

A former Franklin priest accused of sexual misconduct against minors has pleaded guilty to eight charges in Williamson County Court and has been sentenced to seven years in state prison.

Juan Carlos Garcia-Mendoza, 32, was in court July 14 and admitted to four counts of sexual battery by an authority figure, two counts of sexual battery, one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child and one count of aggravated sexual battery.

A federal judge on Friday blocked a Washington state law requiring Catholic priests to report suspected child abuse or neglect, including any information they learn from sacramental confession, raising concerns about religious liberty.

The law, Senate Bill 5375, was slated to go into effect on July 27, but was blocked Friday after Judge David Estudillo of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington granted a preliminary injunction.

The preliminary injunction blocks the state from enforcing the law against all Catholic priests who fall “directly under the administration of” the three archbishops listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. A federal judge has blocked a new mandate for members of clergy to report suspected child abuse or neglect from taking effect next week.

The law, adopted during the 2025 legislative session, has sparked a federal lawsuit, an investigation by the Department of Justice over claims of anti-Catholic bias and vows by Catholic leadership in Seattle and Spokane that their congregations would not fully abide by the requirement.

The law was set to take effect on July 27.

“For centuries, Catholic faithful around the world have sought reconciliation with God through the sacrament of confession,” Jean Hill, executive director of the Washington State Catholic Conference, said in a statement Friday. “This ruling protects that sacred space and ensures that Washingtonians of all religious stripes can live out their beliefs in peace.”

Catholic priests in Washington cannot be required to report child abuse or neglect they learn of in confession, a federal judge ruled Friday.

A team of 18 archaeologists, anthropologists, and forensic scientists have begun excavating an old septic tank this week at the former St. Mary’s Mother and Baby Home run by the Bon Secours Sisters in Tuam, County Galway, western Ireland, now the site of a housing development.

Over the next two years, according to The Irish Times, an excavating machine will go through the site in search of remains for 796 children allegedly buried, in the words of the Bon Secours Sisters “in a disrespectful and unacceptable way” between 1925 and 1960.

The Bon Secours Sisters have released a statement apologizing for the treatment of the deceased babies, and their mothers during that time.

The goal of the excavation is to find, analyze, identify, and provide a decent burial for the children’s remains — many of them newborns.

County prosecutors in Washington state have agreed not to enforce a state law requiring clergy to report child abuse or neglect, if they learned about it in confession. That’s according to a stipulation document filed in the case. 

Catholic leaders claim the law violates their First Amendment right to free exercise of religion by requiring that they break the seal of confession, which is grounds for immediate excommunication in the Catholic Church.

There is still an ongoing request for a judge to file an injunction before the law’s effective date, on July 27. If a judge does grant that, it would stop the law from taking effect at the state level.

A Roanoke priest has been accused in a Florida lawsuit of sexually abusing a boy in the early 2000s. Father George Zina is currently a priest at St. Elias Catholic Church Maronite Center in Roanoke.

This lawsuit was filed in Orange County, Florida, earlier this month by a John Doe against the Diocese of Orlando and two Orange County churches, Holy Family Catholic Church and Saint Jude Maronite Catholic Church.

Anational group of U.S. Catholic priests has urged the Vatican to safeguard the due process rights of accused clergy. The group faulted bishops for allegedly violating canon law in disciplining some priests cited for misconduct.

The Association of U.S. Catholic Priests, formed outside of Chicago in 2011, asked Pope Leo XIV earlier this month to encourage churchwide obedience to canon law, which holds that accused persons are assumed innocent until facts demonstrate otherwise and that religious superiors “must start a judicial or administrative procedure” to discipline priests.

Since his installation as the first Augustinian pontiff in May, Leo, a canon lawyer by training, has repeatedly urged a “firm and decisive” response from church leaders in clergy sex abuse cases while facing questions about his own handling of abuse allegations in Chicago and Peru.

The Catholic bishops of Washington state and several priests were in federal court Monday (July 14) asking the court for a preliminary injunction to temporarily block a clergy mandatory-reporting law that will go into effect on July 27. 

The injunction would allow the court case Etienne v. Ferguson go to full trial, while keeping confessional privileges at status quo if a decision to their case is not made before July 27.

Father Herman Porter, who died in 1986, joins the list of the Diocese of Rockford Priests against whom a substantiated allegation of sexual abuse of a minor has been reported.

Details of the abuse have not been released. In February, diocese officials updated their list of priests who have credible sexual abuse of a minor allegations against them, adding Porter’s name.

Fr. Juan Carlos Garcia, a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Nashville, pleaded guilty Monday to multiple sex crimes. The charges involved both children and adults. In response, SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, observed that cases like this show that the sexual abuse scandal in the Church is not just a thing of the past.

The Benedictine community at Keizersberg Abbey in Leuven, Belgium, has been temporarily dissolved following allegations of abusive behavior among adults, according to an official declaration released by the head of the Sublacense-Cassinese Benedictine Congregation.

Abbot President Ignasi M. Fossas, OSB, announced sweeping disciplinary measures affecting multiple monasteries in the Flemish-Dutch province, including the suspension of community life at Keizersberg Abbey and the temporary prohibition of public ministry for several monks.

Alex Jurado, a popular Catholic apologist known for his social media ministry Voice of Reason, is denying allegations in a bombshell report that he sexually groomed an underage teenage girl when he was 21 years old.

The Protestant website Protestia on Monday published a report alleging that “whistleblowers within the Catholic community” had revealed sexually explicit texts Jurado, now 28, allegedly sent to a girl possibly as young as 14 years old.

A man who told his sisters they would be doing him a favour to have sex with him as he was going to become a priest and had sexual urges has been jailed for eight years.

Richard Brennan (64) previously of Rathfarnham, now living in the United States, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to 24 counts against his three sisters, including 18 of indecent assault and six charges of rape.

He entered the guilty pleas after each of the three women had given evidence before a jury and before the final woman was about to be cross-examined.

According to Williamson County District Attorney General Stacey B. Edmonson, Juan Carlos Garcia Mendoza came to a guilty plea agreement and will serve seven years in federal prison.

In 2024, the Williamson County Grand Jury indicted Garcia Mendoza on a count of continuous sexual abuse of a child, one count of aggravated sexual battery, four counts of sexual battery by an authority figure and two counts of sexual battery.

Following his indictment, he was removed from his position as an associate pastor at St. Philip Catholic Church.

Seibert is accused of sexually abusing a girl who was under age 14 between April 2021 and April 2023. The indictment alleges he unlawfully and knowingly subjected her to sexual contact or penetration on at least five occasions.

A priest in the Diocese of Nashville, Tennessee, will serve seven years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of sex abuse.

Father Juan Carlos Garcia-Mendoza was indicted last year on several counts of sexual battery and other crimes, some of which involved children and some adults. The priest was charged with eight crimes in February 2024 and two more in June of that year.

The Diocese of Nashville said in the Nashville Catholic this week that Garcia had pleaded guilty to the February charges. Those crimes include “continuous sexual abuse of a child,” aggravated sexual battery, and “sexual battery by an authority figure.” 

In addition to the prison sentence, the priest will be listed in the state sex offender registry.

The diocese also indicated that he would be removed from the priesthood. Garcia “agreed not to contest laicization from the priesthood,” the statement said.

Catholic bishops and priests in Washington are challenging a new state law that requires clergy to break the seal of confession to report possible child sex abuse.

The bill, signed by Democratic Gov. Bob Ferguson, a Catholic, in early May, mandates that clergy inform authorities of suspected sex abuse cases, including alleged abuse discussed during the sacrament of reconciliation, or confession. 

Backing the three Catholic dioceses in the state, the Justice Department sued Washington state in late June for launching “attacks on the free exercise of religion” and stated that “anti-Catholic” laws violating the confidentiality of confession are unconstitutional. Several Orthodox churches have joined the lawsuit as well. The hearing took place July 14.

Access to the entire site is now closed off to the public, with 24-hour security also in place

A full forensic excavation on the site of the former mother and baby institution in Tuam, Co Galway, began on Monday morning.

This process will focus on recovering and analysing human remains from the site and will also involve a memorialisation of the deceased.

Ground was broken on the project just after 10.30am, and the excavation expected to take around two years to complete.

“Access to the entire site is now closed off to the public and it is also concealed from view,” the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam confirmed.

There will be a 24-hour security presence at the site, with a 2.4 metre high fence also in place.

Experts are searching for the remains of hundreds of children who died at the institution run by Catholic nuns until 1961, including bodies disposed of in septic tanks.

Excavators broke ground on Monday in western Ireland to search for the bodies of hundreds of babies and young children, some of them discarded in septic tanks, who died at a home for unwed mothers that was managed by Catholic nuns from 1925 to 1961.

The circumstances of the children’s short lives, the treatment of the mothers and the decades of secrecy surrounding the deaths have been recognized widely as a profound moral stain on the Irish government, which funded the institution, and the Catholic Church, which managed it.

When Annette McKay’s first grandson was born, she thought her mother, Maggie O’Connor, would be over the moon. She had become a great-grandmother.

Instead, McKay found her sobbing unconsolably outside her home, crying: “It’s the baby, the baby.”

McKay reassured her 70-year-old mother that her great-grandson was healthy. But O’Connor wasn’t talking about him.

The law ignited a battle between the state and the Catholic Church over whether designating clergy as mandatory reporters limits the free exercise of religion.

A federal judge indicated Monday that he will likely issue a preliminary injunction against Washington’s law designating members of the clergy as mandatory reporters of sex abuse. 

Without an injunction, the law will take effect on July 27. The legislation has received major pushback from Catholic leaders, who claim they are unfairly singled out and would be unconstitutionally required to act against their beliefs should the law be allowed to stand. 

Judge David Estudillo with the U.S. District Court of Western Washington did not issue an official ruling Monday, but said he was leaning toward granting the injunction. His decision is expected to come down before the law’s effective date.

The full excavation of a mass grave of babies and young children at Tuam in County Galway is under way.

The exhumations will be carried out at the site of an institution for unmarried mothers, which operated between 1925 and 1961.

The story came to international attention 11 years ago, after amateur historian Catherine Corless discovered there were death certificates for 796 babies and children who were in the institution, but no burial records.

In 2017, investigators found what they described as “significant quantities of human remains” at the site.

The bodies were in underground chambers in a disused sewage system.

The institution, which was known as St Mary’s mother-and-baby home, was run by Catholic religious order the Bon Secours Sisters and owned by Galway County Council.

A priest in training and religious educator is facing multiple child pornography charges, according to DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle.

Louisiana native Jonathan Nguyen-Voung, 24, was taken into custody without incident July 10 at his place of work at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Olive Branch, the sheriff said.

In a press conference July 11, Tuggle announced the arrest of Nguyen-Voung, who was charged with multiple felonies which include possession of child pornography, accessing and distributing child pornography. Tuggle said forensic experts discovered a device actively downloading explicit material when the search warrant on the suspect’s Nesbit residence was executed.

“We take all crime seriously, especially crimes committed against our children,” Tuggle said. “We will be relentless in our pursuit of these predators.”

After their only scheduled mass of the week at noon on Sunday, members of Ascension Parish battled the high heat and rolling thunder in the distance to attend a meeting for all parishioners at the Polish Falcons Pavilion in their parking lot.

Former Ascension Parish Trustee, Bill Brach, and Mary Pruski, a volunteer at Save Our Buffalo Churches, brought the large group in attendance up to date on what has been happening since last September.

Archbishop Thibault Verny of Chambéry, France, made international headlines as he succeeded one of the most acclaimed figures of church safeguarding in the world, Cardinal Sean O’Malley — retired archbishop of Boston — in his role as president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors (PCPM). 

Verny, 59, may be new to the universal church, yet he is a well-known figure in France and a bishop remembered for his firm stand against abusers in the Catholic Church.

Catholic News Agency reports State Supreme Court in Erie County has issued a temporary halt on payments the Buffalo Catholic Diocese has required of parishes in order to fund its clergy abuse settlement amid a Vatican-moderated dispute over parish mergers.

The lawsuit, filed last Tuesday by nine parishes including Holy Apostles Church in Jamestown, sought the injunction prior to tomorrow’s deadline. That deadline is now on hold until August 6.

All of the churches named in the lawsuit were set to be merged with other area parishes under the diocese’s restructuring plan.

The mergers are on hold while the Vatican looks at appeals seeking to prevent them.

The Archbishop of Toulouse appointed a priest who served a prison sentence for raping a minor as diocesan chancellor and episcopal delegate for marriage.

Archbishop Guy de Kerimel said that by appointing Fr Dominique Spina to the post he had “chosen the path of mercy”.

In 2006, Spina was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student while serving as his spiritual director in the 1990s at Notre-Dame de Bétharram school at Lestelle-Bétharram, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of south-west France.

Parishioners are now trying to block the Diocese of Buffalo from using their churches’ funds toward the $150 million settlement to sex abuse survivors.

Parishioners from five churches filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court seeking a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to prevent church leaders from paying the diocese.   

Those parishioners attend Blessed Sacrament in the town of Tonawanda, Our Lady of Peace in Clarence, Saint Bernadette’s in Orchard Park, St. Aloysius Gonzaga in Cheektowaga and St. John XXIII in West Seneca.

Last month, the diocese ordered these churches to give 80% of their unrestricted cash to help pay the settlement. They were previously told they had until July 15 to do so.

Core groups from five Catholic parishes have filed a lawsuit against the Diocese of Buffalo to block payments that would go toward the diocese’s $150 million settlement with more than 800 survivors of sexual abuse.

The Bishops’ Conference of France this week said a dozen new accusers have come forth with allegations of abuse against deceased Capuchin priest Abbé Pierre.

The famed French priest has already been accused by several dozen people of inflicting abuse over the course of several decades. Pierre founded the Emmaus movement, an international charity effort, after World War II.

In a July 10 press release the French bishops said they were “shocked to receive the testimony of 12 new victims of Abbé Pierre, including 7 minors at the time of the events.”

The bishops “assure these people of their support,” the prelates said in the release.

The Rockford Diocese priest organized the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus in 1968 and was floated as a candidate for Archbishop of Washington.

The late Fr Herman A. Porter, an African-American Catholic priest who served in the Midwest and in 1968 organized the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, has been added to the Diocese of Rockford’s list of clergy credibly accused of child sex abuse.

The diocese released the updated list earlier this year, as noted in a February bulletin from one of Porter’s former parishes, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling, Illinois.

“Per diocesan policy, parishioners at parishes where Father Porter served, even though briefly, were notified and his name has now been added to the Diocese of Rockford’s list of priests against whom an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor has been substantiated,” the bulletin stated.

A French archbishop’s decision to promote a priest who was sentenced to jail for raping a teenage boy has drawn new condemnation of the Roman Catholic Church for its record on sex abuse.

Victim support groups and traditionalists have expressed outrage over the case of Dominique Spina, who was found guilty of raping a 16-year-old boy in 2006 and sentenced to five years in prison.

The archbishop of Toulouse, Guy de Kerimel, set off the controversy in June when he named Spina as diocesan chancellor, putting him in charge of archives.

The canonical code lays down that the chancellor must be “of honest reputation and above all suspicion.”

SÃO PAULO – Lux Mundi Center, an office established by the Conference of Religious of Brazil and by the Bishops’ Conference, recently promoted a cycle of conferences with Father Hans Zollner, a major international expert on safeguarding, as part of its effort to educate priests and members of religious groups on abuse prevention in Brazil.

Zollner visited the South American nation at the end of May and his classes, attended by hundreds of participants – both in person and on-line – highlighted the importance of transforming Catholic communities, parishes, and ecclesiastical movements into safe spaces for everybody, especially for children, teenagers and vulnerable adults.

A former bishop in the Church in Wales is facing fresh allegations of historic sexual abuse, as a BBC investigation uncovers new claims against Anthony Pierce and another former clergyman.

Pierce, once Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, is currently serving four years in prison for indecent assaults on a child during his time as a parish priest in the 1980s.

His lawyer says he “deeply regrets” the crimes, while the Church in Wales has admitted it feels “the most profound shame at the dreadful offences”.

A British Columbia father and son are suing the Anglican Church of Canada, alleging the son was conceived as a result of sexual abuse by a female employee of St. Michael’s Indian Residential School in Alert Bay in the late 1960s. 

The lawsuit says the father was 14 years old when he was victimized by a school supervisor in 1968, and he settled a lawsuit with the church in 2008 over the alleged sexual assault at the school on Cormorant Island, northeast of Vancouver Island. 

Court documents filed this week in B.C. Supreme Court say the plaintiffs only recently found out they were related, leading to a “traumatic reunion,” and their relationship has been confirmed by DNA testing.

A group of parishioners suing the Diocese of Buffalo do not have to add local church funds into a massive sex abuse survivors settlement — at least not yet.

The original deadline to do so, as outlined in the diocese’s “Road to Renewal” plan, was July 15. After Friday’s hearing in Erie County State Supreme Court, that deadline is now on hold until at least the next court date, Aug. 6.

One fall night in September 2023, Emma Misco arrived at her church in upstate New York to discover an unpleasant surprise.

On Monday — six years after a 9-year-old child came forward with sexual abuse allegations against a lay minister in an Illinois church — a long-awaited church trial will begin for Bishop Stewart Ruch, leader of the Anglican Church in North America’s Upper Midwest Diocese. Open only to those directly involved and the seven-member Court of a Trial of a Bishop, the proceeding will determine whether Ruch, an influential and charismatic figure, responded appropriately.

Newsboys owner Wes Campbell dropped a bombshell Thursday by resigning from the Gospel Music Association (GMA) board over allegations that Newsboys Inc. covered up stories of sexual assault by former frontman Michael Tait.

He also hinted members of his own family were among those assaulted.

Campbell announced his resignation in a letter he sent to the GMA board, which then was leaked and posted by multiple people on Facebook. The Roys Report (TRR) has confirmed the letter’s authenticity with someone within the Newsboys organization.

Stating he is stepping down due to a “supposed coverup” regarding Tait, Campbell said that the impetus was a series of articles published last month detailing decades of alleged sexual assault and substance abuse.

Former members of the Golden Dawn Tabernacle Church are speaking out after their pastor, Isaac Noriega, was criminally charged for allegedly ignoring years of child abuse within the church.

Authorities arrested a priest in training in DeSoto County as part of a child exploitation operation, according to DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle.

Tuggle said detectives with the department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Division executed a search warrant in Nesbit, MS, on Thursday, July 10. That search warrant was part of a law enforcement operation targeting people wanted for child exploitation crimes, according to the sheriff. Tuggle said led investigators arrested 24-year-old Jonathan Nguyen-Voung, a priest in training, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Olive Branch, where Nguyen-Voung worked as a religious educator. 

Nguyen-Voung is charged with multiple felonies, including possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography and distribution of child pornography. 

Tuggle said detectives recovered multiple files containing explicit material involving minors from electronic devices seized at the home in Nesbitt.

Following the arrest of a Catholic priest who is accused of sexually abusing three children in San Luis Obispo County, a fourth victim lodged claims of abuse that occurred from 2005 through 2010.

Father Theodore Gabrielli, 61, is now facing 26 criminal counts. All of the children were under the age of 14 when the alleged abuse began.

At his arraignment hearing on July 8, Gabrielli pleaded not guilty. He remains in the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, sodomy of a child under 14 years of age, oral copulation upon a minor and lewd acts with a child.

While Archbishop Guy de Kerimel of Toulouse argues that appointing the priest to a prominent archdiocesan position is an act of mercy, Catholics in France and the U.S. seem skeptical, with some asking why Fr. Dominique Spina is eligible for any diocesan assignment at all.

And as the archbishop doubles down in the face of criticism, the case seems almost certain to find itself on the desk of Pope Leo XIV, whose judgment on the case would speak volumes about what the Church can expect of the pontiff’s approach to safeguarding.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A group of Western New York parishioners have sued the Buffalo Diocese seeking to stop the diocese from using parish funds towards the $150 million settlement with hundreds of child sex abuse survivors.

The suit, filed Tuesday in State Supreme Court, is seeking a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction to prevent pastors from paying the diocese by the July 15 deadline.

The parishioners named in the lawsuit attend Blessed Sacrament in Tonawanda, Our Lady of Peace in Clarence, St. Bernadette in Orchard Park, St. Aloysius Gonzaga in Cheektowaga and St. John XXIII in West Seneca. All of those churches were set to be merged with other area parishes under the diocese’s restructuring plan.

The mergers are on hold while the Vatican looks at appeals seeking to prevent them.

A court rejected an abuse survivor’s claim against the Archdiocese of Cologne for more than €800,000 Euros because she was abused by a priest acting as her foster father.

A German court has rejected a claim for more than €800,000 (approximately $865,000) in damages from a woman who was abused by a Catholic priest who also served as her foster father.

The priest, identified as Fr. U., abused Melanie F. over several years and forced her to have an abortion. However, the court ruled that because the foster care arrangement was made through the state, the abuse occurred in a private capacity—not as part of his clerical duties.

The court also determined that the Archdiocese of Cologne could not be held liable, as there was no evidence that church officials were aware of the abuse.

The Archdiocese of Hartford has agreed to pay a former altar boy $2.4 million to settle his claim that a priest sexually abused him more than 100 times over a five-year period in the 1980s.

Father Adolphe Renkiewicz hand-picked the youth, an altar boy at the since-closed Saint Adalbert Church and School in Enfield, to serve at funerals and other services, according to the victim’s attorney.

“My client was an altar server, an altar boy, and he would be taken out of class to go serve a funeral, for instance,” attorney Mitchell Garabedian told WVIT on Tuesday. “After the service, my client would be abused.”

French Archbishop Guy de Kerimel of Toulouse defended his appointment of a priest convicted of sexually abusing a minor as diocesan chancellor, saying that he had “chosen the path of mercy.”

The June 2 appointment of Father Dominique Spina gained widespread attention in the country after the French daily, La Dépêche du Midi, noted the priest’s 1993 conviction for sexually abusing a 16-year-old high school student, for which he was given a five-year prison sentence.

A year after the first claims of sexual abuse by the French priest and charity founder Abbé Pierre, 12 more people say they were assaulted. Seven of them say they were minors at the time. The Catholic Church and Emmaüs, the charity organisation founded by Abbé Pierre, have put in place a compensation fund.

Henri Grouès, known as Abbé Pierre, died in 2007. He has now been accused of 45 acts of sexual violence. Twelve new testimonies have been collected since January by Égaé, the helpline for victims.

– The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office filed an amended complaint on July 8 against Theodore Gabrielli, adding six new charges related to alleged child molestation involving a fourth victim under the age of 14. Gabrielli now faces a total of 26 counts of child molestation involving incidents that allegedly occurred decades ago within the county.

Gabrielli was employed as a Catholic priest at the time of the alleged offenses, which occurred over a period of several years. All criminal defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty by plea or conviction by a judge or jury.

A survey of 5,000 articles found that 1,247 concerned the Catholic Church.

The Christianity in the News Media Report said personal faith was the leading theme of all reports on Christianity published between December 2023 and November 2024.

It featured in 1,635 articles on Christianity, according to the report commissioned by the Christian media group, Jersey Road. The Church of England was mentioned in 846 reports.

Although the Catholic Church is only the second largest denomination in England and Wales (with 31 per cent of church attendance), it received 1.5 times more media coverage than the Church of England, “despite the latter being both the established church and the largest in England and Wales (34 per cent of attendance).”

The Catholic Church’s powerful Sydney Archdiocese has failed to report to NSW Police allegations of abuse involving one of its most senior figures, despite “disclosing” the matter a week ago.

NSW Police said they “have not received any notification” from the church, about the abuse allegations involving Auxiliary Bishop Richard Umbers, who is second only to Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher.

A contested Washington state law that would require priests to violate the seal of confession to report abuse “represents an egregious violation of the free exercise clause of the First Amendment,” Bishop Robert E. Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, who is a member of the U.S. Religious Liberty Commission, told OSV News.

An inquest has been opened into the death of a former Church of England priest who raped a six-year-old boy. 

Ifor Whittaker, who was serving as a prisoner at HMP Littlehey, near Huntingdon, died at Peterborough City Hospital on March 31. 

An investigation launched by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is ongoing. 

The 80-year-old admitted to raping a child in the vestry of St John the Baptist Church, in Sedlescombe, East Sussex, in the late 1990s. 

Whittaker was jailed for life in November last year after admitting rape and gross indecency while serving as a priest under the name Colin Pritchard. 

Handing down his sentence, Judge Gary Lucie described the former priest as a “predatory paedophile”, adding the offence had been “an egregious breach of trust”.

Legalise Cannabis MP Rachel Payne has welcomed the State Government’s intent to hold churches vicariously liable for child sexual abuse committed by their clergy.

It comes after a High Court ruling last November that the Catholic Church was not liable for abuse by a Ballarat priest.

A Catholic priest has been arrested for allegedly forcibly touching a woman inside a church kitchen in a Long Island diocese already reeling from so many sex-abuse cases that it’s bankrupt.

The Rev. John Adjei-Boamah, 43, was hit with the two sex-abuse misdemeanors for allegedly forcing himself on the unidentified woman in the St. Catherine of Sienna Roman Catholic Church rectory in Franklin Square, Nassau County cops said.

CALDWELL, Idaho — A Nampa man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a nine-year-old and been sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in prison.

“The Canyon County Prosecutor’s Office acknowledges the diligent efforts of the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office in investigating this case and ensuring accountability for these offenses. The Prosecutor’s Office remains committed to protecting vulnerable victims and holding offenders accountable under the law,” the office stated.

According to the Canyon County Prosecutor’s Office, Russell Edward Graves, 44, was sentenced by Judge Thomas Whitney on July 2 and is required to serve at least seven years before becoming eligible for parole.

How much can we trust our memories? We know that our mind keeps an imperfect record of the past. We can forget or misremember details, with frustrating consequences. Our attention can be diverted in ways that make it all too easy to miss key events.

But a particularly disturbing idea is that we readily form false memories—that is, that we can become convinced we experienced something that never actually occurred. The suggestion that it is easy to create false memories of entire events is often used to cast doubt on the reliability of a plaintiff’s testimony in a court case. For example, lawyers representing movie executive Harvey Weinstein cited this idea to raise questions about several women’s allegations against him.

French Archbishop Thibault Verny is the Vatican’s new president of its Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors after opposing child abuse within the Episcopal Conference.

Pope Leo XIV appointed Verny to succeed American Capuchin Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, with whom Verny worked to promote a “culture of protection for vulnerable people,” Vatican News reported on Saturday.

Verny is the Archbishop of Chambery and the Bishop of Maurienne and Tarentaise in France.

Pope Leo XIV has appointed the French archbishop of Chambéry, Thibault Verny, as the new president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, the Vatican announced today, July 5. Archbishop Verny, 59, has been a member of the commission since 2022.

He succeeds Cardinal Seán O’Malley, 81, the emeritus archbishop of Boston who has served with distinction as the first president of the commission ever since Pope Francis first established it in 2014 as an advisory body to the pope. In France, Archbishop Verny was responsible for the fight against child abuse within the Episcopal Conference.

Archbishop Thibault Verny is the new president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. He will put his French experience at the service of the universal Church, while retaining his diocesan responsibilities. He was President of the Council for the Prevention and Fight against Paedophilia within the Episcopal Conference of his own country until last June, when he passed the baton to Bishop Gérard Le Stang of Amiens, who was elected to that position during the last plenary assembly.

Pope Leo XIV signaled commitment to continuing the fight against clergy sexual abuse by appointing France’s Bishop Thibault Verny to head the Vatican’s child protection advisory commission on Saturday.

Verny, 59, replaces American Cardinal Sean O’Malley, the retired archbishop of Boston. O’Malley was the founding president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, an advisory group Pope Francis established in 2014 to advise the church on best practices to fight abuse and protect children.

As the abuse scandal spread globally during Francis’ 12-year pontificate, the commission initially lost influence and its crowning recommendation — the creation of a tribunal to judge bishops who covered up for predator priests — went nowhere. After many years of reform and new members, it has become a place where victims can go to be heard and bishops can get advice on crafting guidelines to fight abuse.
