A Juárez priest was sentenced to four years plus 10 months in prison after he was convicted of sexually abusing a young girl 12 years ago, the Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office said.

Eliseo R.S. took advantage of his role as a member of the clergy to sexually abuse the child inside a Catholic church on the Juárez-Porvernir highway in on June 2, 2013, the state attorney general’s office said in a news release on Monday, July 21.

The girl reported she was sexually molested by the priest during confession before making her first Communion, reported the Diario de Juárez. The child told her mother, who didn’t believe her, but her sister did, confiding a similar thing had happened to her, the newspaper reported.

A new settlement has been reached between hundreds of survivors of sexual abuse and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester. 

The total $246 million settlement between the survivors and the diocese includes a $120 million payout from Continental Insurance Company, the final holdout insurer in the case, which was announced by attorneys. 

CNA previously claimed the diocese breached contract when it dropped out of a 2022 settlement, and therefore it was no longer responsible for contributing to the settlement. A judge dismissed that case and CNA appealed the decision. However, the insurer has now agreed to a $120 million payout after survivors voted down a $75 million offer last year.

Pedro Arrupe, the late, former worldwide leader of the Jesuit religious order and a candidate for Catholic sainthood, acknowledged in records produced as part of a New Orleans court case that he was warned that one of the group’s aspiring priests had been accused of sexually abusing two minors and acknowledged making sexual advances on a third.

The man was ultimately ordained and there is no indication in records in the court case in Louisiana that Arrupe took steps to prevent him from becoming a priest. The man was later accused of abusing other minors he met through his ministry.

Rochester, N.Y. — The Diocese of Rochester has reached a significant settlement with survivors of clergy sex abuse, marking a pivotal moment in its ongoing bankruptcy case.

The settlement, totaling $246 million, includes a $120 million agreement with Continental Insurance Company, a holdout insurer.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Calling it a momentous day, attorneys representing survivors of clergy sexual abuse in Rochester announced a new settlement Thursday.

Jeff Anderson & Associates reported a $120 million agreement between the survivors and the Diocese of Rochester. The payout comes from Continental Insurance Company (CNA), the final holdout insurer in the case.

Back in 2022, News 8 reported that more than 450 sexual abuse claims were filed in connection with the case against the Diocese — many of them in response to the Child Victims Act, which extended the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse cases. 

The Diocese filed for bankruptcy shortly after a 2019 New York law took effect, which allowed victims of childhood sexual abuse to file lawsuits regardless of when the abuse occurred.

ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) — Father George Zina, a priest at St. Elias Catholic Church Maronite Center in Roanoke, is named in a lawsuit that accuses him of sexually abusing a young boy in the early 2000s.

The lawsuit, filed in Orange County, Florida, by John Doe, is asking for compensation of $10 million in damages, filed against the Diocese of Orlando, Holy Family Catholic Church Orlando Inc. and St. Jude Maronite Catholic Church.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy shared their stories in federal bankruptcy court today with Bishop Salvatore Matano in the gallery listening.

Just before the testimonials, lawyers announced the final part of the settlement – a last insurance company agreed to pay $120 million, raising the total payout to survivors to $246 million.

Everyone who spoke was an adult but they were children when they were abused and many showed photos of themselves before and after the abuse to reinforce it.

Just about every single person talked about lifelong damage.

Survivors of sex abuse by Catholic priests are speaking out to make sure they can continue to share their stories in court.

It comes after the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s bankruptcy case continues to unfold.Advertisement

Survivors said the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s insurance companies filed an objection when the creditors committee asked to have more testimony from survivors in another bankruptcy hearing.

However, abuse survivors said it’s important for them to continue to testify to help people know the truth, and to help them heal.

Survivors testified during bankruptcy hearings in federal court last year, but the testimony was not included in the court record. It did give survivors a chance to tell the judge how the abuse impacted them.

Archbishop Giraud called the appointment of a priest convicted of rape as chancellor in another diocese ‘unacceptable.’

A French archbishop has publicly criticized the appointment of a priest convicted of rape as chancellor of the Archdiocese of Toulouse, calling the appointment was “unacceptable and untenable.”

Archbishop Hervé Giraud of the Diocese of Viviers criticized the appointment of Fr. Dominque Spina in the Toulouse archdiocese, which caused uproar among French Catholics earlier this month first in a social media post on July 21 and then again in an interview with the magazine La Vie, published the following day.

The archbishop said he was “appalled by this appointment,” and called his intervention over the decision of a brother bishop an expression of “fraternal correction.”

The long-awaited church trial of Bishop Stewart Ruch, a leader in the Anglican Church in North America, is facing a crisis in the wake of the sudden resignation of a lawyer who represented the denomination in the proceedings. In a resignation letter dated July 19, the lawyer, C. Alan Runyan, wrote that “the trial process had been irreparably tainted.”

Bishop Jesús Ruiz Molina of the Catholic Diocese of Mbaïki in the Central African Republic (CAR) has denied accusations of silence and complicity in an anonymous allegation of sexual abuse involving a Diocesan Priest, describing the claims as false and calling for unity, reconciliation, and truth within the local Church.

The remains of Bishop Eamonn Casey have been removed from the cathedral crypt and returned to his family

The Diocese of Galway has removed a former bishop’s remains from the diocesan cathedral over allegations of sexual abuse.

In a statement released July 19, the Diocese of Galway announced that the remains of Bishop Eamonn Casey had been recently removed from the crypt of the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas and returned to his family for private burial.

Casey led the diocese from 1976 until 1992, when he stepped down after it was revealed he had fathered a child with a distant cousin. He died in 2017. Prior to his death he was accused of sexual abuse of minors, including by his own neice.

The remains of former Bishop Eamonn Casey of Galway, who resigned from office in 1992 after it was revealed he had fathered a child in 1974, have been removed from their burial place in Galway Cathedral in the wake of a number of allegations of child abuse that came to light in 2024.

He is the first Irish bishop to undergo such public censure. The move follows a yearlong consultation in the diocese in the west of Ireland.

Bishop Casey died on March 13, 2017, at age 89. He served as bishop of Galway 1976-1992 and as bishop of Kerry 1969-1976.

An Alabama Christian school teacher has been arrested for alleged sex misconduct with a female student, according to a statement from the Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s office.

Sarah Huggins Logan, 35, was arrested on Friday and charged with one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act, according to the statement. More charges are likely to come, it added.

North River Christian Academy, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, confirmed that “a former employee” had been arrested by local law enforcement, according to its statement posted Friday on Facebook.

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – A former church youth leader from Decatur is accused of sexually abusing underage girls, and prosecutors say it’s been going on for over a decade.

Jonathan D. Lyon, 31, is accused of sexually abusing girls as young 12. 

He appeared in Macon County Circuit Court July 18 on three counts of criminal sexual abuse. 

The Decatur Police Department arrested Lyon on July 16 following an investigation that also included the Clinton Police Department. 

In 2023, an information report showed Facebook messages between Lyon and a friend at the time where Lyon admitting to sexually abusing underage girls. This came after an alleged victim contacted Lyon’s friend to warn him about his behavior.

The Archdiocese of Cologne has dismissed as “obviously baseless” a canonical complaint filed against Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki by German abuse survivors to Pope Leo XIV, calling the allegations unfounded and built on “false assumptions.”

The archdiocese’s response came after the “Betroffenenbeirat” (Affected Advisory Board) of the German Bishops’ Conference submitted a formal Church law complaint to Pope Leo XIV on Friday.

A former Catholic priest, who is currently behind bars for historic child sex abuse, has pleaded guilty to further offences.

Dennis Finbow, who served the parishes of St Neots and Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, had pleaded guilty to 15 counts of indecent assault.

The abuse was against five victims – three females and two males – the majority of whom were under the age of 16 when they were abused by Finbow.

The offences took place between 1975 and 1992.

Finbow is currently serving a six-and-a-half year prison sentence for sexually abusing a young girl in the 1980s, while he was working in Dogsthorpe, Peterborough.

Between 1982 and 1985, Finbow would visit the family home of a young girl in Peterborough and go up to her bedroom, claiming that the girl’s mother sent him upstairs.

On July 18, a federal court blocked a law passed in Washington state that would have required clergy to report child abuse when shared in the confessional. Washington bishops had filed a lawsuit earlier this summer in Etienne v. Ferguson, claiming the law was “anti-Catholic” and violated religious liberty.

“For centuries, Catholic faithful around the world have sought reconciliation with God through the sacrament of confession,” says Jean Hill, executive director of the Washington State Catholic Conference, in a press release. “This ruling protects that sacred space and ensures that Washingtonians of all religious stripes can live out their beliefs in peace.”

(OSV News) — A Byzantine Catholic bishop has prohibited Catholic social media influencer and apologist Alex Jurado from eparchy events pending an investigation, after allegations emerged online accusing Jurado of inappropriate conduct toward a minor teenage girl several years ago. Jurado has publicly denied the allegation and affirmed he is cooperating with an investigation.

Bishop Artur Bubnevych of the Holy Protection of Mary Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix issued a July 16 statement to that eparchy’s clergy — a copy of which OSV News has obtained — advising that Jurado, “a regular attendee at one of our parishes” known for his “Voice of Reason” social media channel, was prohibited from “activity or involvement … occurring in any facilities of, or events being sponsored by the Eparchy of Phoenix until further notice.”

Investigators are still seeking the masterminds behind the fraud.

Two men from Bulgaria were given jail sentences this week for helping to launder 61 million euros (around $67 million) from a Catholic charitable organization in Luxembourg to bank accounts in Spain.

On July 15, a court in Luxembourg gave both men sentences of 18 months in prison, with 15 months suspended. The court also ordered them to pay 3,000 euro fines (roughly $3,500), after they reached a deal with public prosecutors and cooperated in the investigation.

The two men agreed to a plea bargain over their participation in a months-long money-laundering scheme targeting Caritas Luxembourg, which plunged the organization into crisis and led to its restructuring.

Three Roman Catholic bishops had sued the state government over a new law — SB 5375 — that would extend mandatory abuse reporting rules to the sacrament of confession despite the Church’s absolute ban on revealing such secrets.

The rain fell with a mournful intent last Monday morning, soaking the semi-detached houses in the Dublin Road estate, as the first diggers rolled into position behind sealed gates. British MPs passed a law last month to decriminalise women in England and Wales who terminate their pregnancies after 24 weeks, potentially up to full term.

The landslide vote in the House of Commons was prompted by cases such as that of Nicola Packer, who was prosecuted for taking medication to induce an abortion at 26 weeks.

Federal Court temporarily blocked the state from enforcing the law that required clergy report child abuse by breaking the seal of confession.

A federal judge has halted a Washington state law that required Catholic priests to break the seal of confession.

The law that was passed in May, and was slated to go into effect on July 27, mandated that clergy must report child abuse or neglect when it was disclosed to them during confession.

“There is no question that SB 5375 burdens Plaintiffs’ free exercise of religion,” wrote Judge David G. Estudillo.

The Trump administration secured a victory for the confidentiality of the confessional booth as a federal judge temporarily blocked a recently-enacted anti-child abuse statute in Washington state.

A former Franklin priest accused of sexual misconduct against minors has pleaded guilty to eight charges in Williamson County Court and has been sentenced to seven years in state prison.

A federal judge on Friday blocked a Washington state law requiring Catholic priests to report suspected child abuse or neglect, including any information they learn from sacramental confession, raising concerns about religious liberty.

The law, Senate Bill 5375, was slated to go into effect on July 27, but was blocked Friday after Judge David Estudillo of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington granted a preliminary injunction.

A federal judge has blocked a new mandate for members of clergy to report suspected child abuse or neglect from taking effect next week.

The law, adopted during the 2025 legislative session, has sparked a federal lawsuit, an investigation by the Department of Justice over claims of anti-Catholic bias and vows by Catholic leadership in Seattle and Spokane that their congregations would not fully abide by the requirement.

The law was set to take effect on July 27.

A team of 18 archaeologists, anthropologists, and forensic scientists have begun excavating an old septic tank this week at the former St. Mary’s Mother and Baby Home run by the Bon Secours Sisters in Tuam, County Galway, western Ireland, now the site of a housing development.

Over the next two years, according to The Irish Times, an excavating machine will go through the site in search of remains for 796 children allegedly buried, in the words of the Bon Secours Sisters “in a disrespectful and unacceptable way” between 1925 and 1960.

The Bon Secours Sisters have released a statement apologizing for the treatment of the deceased babies, and their mothers during that time.

County prosecutors in Washington state have agreed not to enforce a state law requiring clergy to report child abuse or neglect, if they learned about it in confession. That’s according to a stipulation document filed in the case. 

Catholic leaders claim the law violates their First Amendment right to free exercise of religion by requiring that they break the seal of confession, which is grounds for immediate excommunication in the Catholic Church.

There is still an ongoing request for a judge to file an injunction before the law’s effective date, on July 27. If a judge does grant that, it would stop the law from taking effect at the state level.

A Roanoke priest has been accused in a Florida lawsuit of sexually abusing a boy in the early 2000s. Father George Zina is currently a priest at St. Elias Catholic Church Maronite Center in Roanoke.

This lawsuit was filed in Orange County, Florida, earlier this month by a John Doe against the Diocese of Orlando and two Orange County churches, Holy Family Catholic Church and Saint Jude Maronite Catholic Church.

OSV News reached out to the Vatican press office July 14 for a comment on the Italian monsignor’s continued employment and also sought comment from the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. OSV News is awaiting a response, as neither has issued a statement.

Anational group of U.S. Catholic priests has urged the Vatican to safeguard the due process rights of accused clergy. The group faulted bishops for allegedly violating canon law in disciplining some priests cited for misconduct.

The Association of U.S. Catholic Priests, formed outside of Chicago in 2011, asked Pope Leo XIV earlier this month to encourage churchwide obedience to canon law, which holds that accused persons are assumed innocent until facts demonstrate otherwise and that religious superiors “must start a judicial or administrative procedure” to discipline priests.

Since his installation as the first Augustinian pontiff in May, Leo, a canon lawyer by training, has repeatedly urged a “firm and decisive” response from church leaders in clergy sex abuse cases while facing questions about his own handling of abuse allegations in Chicago and Peru.

The Catholic bishops of Washington state and several priests were in federal court Monday (July 14) asking the court for a preliminary injunction to temporarily block a clergy mandatory-reporting law that will go into effect on July 27.

Father Herman Porter, who died in 1986, joins the list of the Diocese of Rockford Priests against whom a substantiated allegation of sexual abuse of a minor has been reported.

Details of the abuse have not been released. In February, diocese officials updated their list of priests who have credible sexual abuse of a minor allegations against them, adding Porter’s name.

A Lima priest accused of sexual misconduct requested laicization last week, after The Pillar reported charges that the Lima archdiocese mishandled the allegations against him, in a process that some alleged amounted to a cover-up for a priest close to Lima’s Cardinal Carlos Castillo.

The Benedictine community at Keizersberg Abbey in Leuven, Belgium, has been temporarily dissolved following allegations of abusive behavior among adults, according to an official declaration released by the head of the Sublacense-Cassinese Benedictine Congregation.

Abbot President Ignasi M. Fossas, OSB, announced sweeping disciplinary measures affecting multiple monasteries in the Flemish-Dutch province, including the suspension of community life at Keizersberg Abbey and the temporary prohibition of public ministry for several monks.

Alex Jurado, a popular Catholic apologist known for his social media ministry Voice of Reason, is denying allegations in a bombshell report that he sexually groomed an underage teenage girl when he was 21 years old.

The Protestant website Protestia on Monday published a report alleging that “whistleblowers within the Catholic community” had revealed sexually explicit texts Jurado, now 28, allegedly sent to a girl possibly as young as 14 years old.

The website shared screenshots of the alleged conversations between Jurado and the young girl. The site further alleged that Jurado had sent “sexually explicit messages” to several other women.

A man who told his sisters they would be doing him a favour to have sex with him as he was going to become a priest and had sexual urges has been jailed for eight years.

Richard Brennan (64) previously of Rathfarnham, now living in the United States, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to 24 counts against his three sisters, including 18 of indecent assault and six charges of rape.

He entered the guilty pleas after each of the three women had given evidence before a jury and before the final woman was about to be cross-examined.

He pleaded guilty to four sample charges of indecent assault and four rape charges against Paula Faye on dates between January 1978 and December 1981 when she was aged between 13 and 17 years old.

A former Franklin priest has pleaded guilty as charged to several child sex abuse charges.

According to Williamson County District Attorney General Stacey B. Edmonson, Juan Carlos Garcia Mendoza came to a guilty plea agreement and will serve seven years in federal prison.

In 2024, the Williamson County Grand Jury indicted Garcia Mendoza on a count of continuous sexual abuse of a child, one count of aggravated sexual battery, four counts of sexual battery by an authority figure and two counts of sexual battery.

Following his indictment, he was removed from his position as an associate pastor at St. Philip Catholic Church.

A former principal of St. Joseph Catholic School in Salem and vice principal of Regis St. Mary Catholic School in Stayton was charged July 15 with sexually abusing a minor while he was employed at Regis.

Christopher Seibert, 56, was arrested July 14 after a Marion County grand jury indicted him on four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and one count of second-degree unlawful sexual penetration.

Seibert is accused of sexually abusing a girl who was under age 14 between April 2021 and April 2023. The indictment alleges he unlawfully and knowingly subjected her to sexual contact or penetration on at least five occasions.

Deputy District Attorney Caitlin Spencer said at the arraignment that Seibert would pull the student out of class, take her to his office and put his hand under her skirt or blouse.

A priest in the Diocese of Nashville, Tennessee, will serve seven years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of sex abuse.

Father Juan Carlos Garcia-Mendoza was indicted last year on several counts of sexual battery and other crimes, some of which involved children and some adults. The priest was charged with eight crimes in February 2024 and two more in June of that year.

The Diocese of Nashville said in the Nashville Catholic this week that Garcia had pleaded guilty to the February charges. Those crimes include “continuous sexual abuse of a child,” aggravated sexual battery, and “sexual battery by an authority figure.” 

In addition to the prison sentence, the priest will be listed in the state sex offender registry.

The diocese also indicated that he would be removed from the priesthood. Garcia “agreed not to contest laicization from the priesthood,” the statement said.

Catholic bishops and priests in Washington are challenging a new state law that requires clergy to break the seal of confession to report possible child sex abuse.

The bill, signed by Democratic Gov. Bob Ferguson, a Catholic, in early May, mandates that clergy inform authorities of suspected sex abuse cases, including alleged abuse discussed during the sacrament of reconciliation, or confession. 

Backing the three Catholic dioceses in the state, the Justice Department sued Washington state in late June for launching “attacks on the free exercise of religion” and stated that “anti-Catholic” laws violating the confidentiality of confession are unconstitutional. Several Orthodox churches have joined the lawsuit as well. The hearing took place July 14.

Access to the entire site is now closed off to the public, with 24-hour security also in place

A full forensic excavation on the site of the former mother and baby institution in Tuam, Co Galway, began on Monday morning.

This process will focus on recovering and analysing human remains from the site and will also involve a memorialisation of the deceased.

Ground was broken on the project just after 10.30am, and the excavation expected to take around two years to complete.

“Access to the entire site is now closed off to the public and it is also concealed from view,” the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam confirmed.

When Annette McKay’s first grandson was born, she thought her mother, Maggie O’Connor, would be over the moon. She had become a great-grandmother.

Instead, McKay found her sobbing unconsolably outside her home, crying: “It’s the baby, the baby.”

McKay reassured her 70-year-old mother that her great-grandson was healthy. But O’Connor wasn’t talking about him.

The law ignited a battle between the state and the Catholic Church over whether designating clergy as mandatory reporters limits the free exercise of religion.

A federal judge indicated Monday that he will likely issue a preliminary injunction against Washington’s law designating members of the clergy as mandatory reporters of sex abuse. 

Without an injunction, the law will take effect on July 27. The legislation has received major pushback from Catholic leaders, who claim they are unfairly singled out and would be unconstitutionally required to act against their beliefs should the law be allowed to stand. 

Judge David Estudillo with the U.S. District Court of Western Washington did not issue an official ruling Monday, but said he was leaning toward granting the injunction. His decision is expected to come down before the law’s effective date.

The full excavation of a mass grave of babies and young children at Tuam in County Galway is under way.

The exhumations will be carried out at the site of an institution for unmarried mothers, which operated between 1925 and 1961.

The story came to international attention 11 years ago, after amateur historian Catherine Corless discovered there were death certificates for 796 babies and children who were in the institution, but no burial records.

In 2017, investigators found what they described as “significant quantities of human remains” at the site.

The bodies were in underground chambers in a disused sewage system.

The institution, which was known as St Mary’s mother-and-baby home, was run by Catholic religious order the Bon Secours Sisters and owned by Galway County Council.

A priest in training and religious educator is facing multiple child pornography charges, according to DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle.

Louisiana native Jonathan Nguyen-Voung, 24, was taken into custody without incident July 10 at his place of work at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Olive Branch, the sheriff said.

In a press conference July 11, Tuggle announced the arrest of Nguyen-Voung, who was charged with multiple felonies which include possession of child pornography, accessing and distributing child pornography. Tuggle said forensic experts discovered a device actively downloading explicit material when the search warrant on the suspect’s Nesbit residence was executed.

“We take all crime seriously, especially crimes committed against our children,” Tuggle said. “We will be relentless in our pursuit of these predators.”

After their only scheduled mass of the week at noon on Sunday, members of Ascension Parish battled the high heat and rolling thunder in the distance to attend a meeting for all parishioners at the Polish Falcons Pavilion in their parking lot.

Former Ascension Parish Trustee, Bill Brach, and Mary Pruski, a volunteer at Save Our Buffalo Churches, brought the large group in attendance up to date on what has been happening since last September.

Archbishop Thibault Verny of Chambéry, France, made international headlines as he succeeded one of the most acclaimed figures of church safeguarding in the world, Cardinal Sean O’Malley — retired archbishop of Boston — in his role as president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors (PCPM). 

Verny, 59, may be new to the universal church, yet he is a well-known figure in France and a bishop remembered for his firm stand against abusers in the Catholic Church.

Catholic News Agency reports State Supreme Court in Erie County has issued a temporary halt on payments the Buffalo Catholic Diocese has required of parishes in order to fund its clergy abuse settlement amid a Vatican-moderated dispute over parish mergers.

The lawsuit, filed last Tuesday by nine parishes including Holy Apostles Church in Jamestown, sought the injunction prior to tomorrow’s deadline. That deadline is now on hold until August 6.

All of the churches named in the lawsuit were set to be merged with other area parishes under the diocese’s restructuring plan.

The mergers are on hold while the Vatican looks at appeals seeking to prevent them.

The Archbishop of Toulouse appointed a priest who served a prison sentence for raping a minor as diocesan chancellor and episcopal delegate for marriage.

Archbishop Guy de Kerimel said that by appointing Fr Dominique Spina to the post he had “chosen the path of mercy”.

In 2006, Spina was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student while serving as his spiritual director in the 1990s at Notre-Dame de Bétharram school at Lestelle-Bétharram, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of south-west France.

Parishioners are now trying to block the Diocese of Buffalo from using their churches’ funds toward the $150 million settlement to sex abuse survivors.

Parishioners from five churches filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court seeking a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to prevent church leaders from paying the diocese.   

Those parishioners attend Blessed Sacrament in the town of Tonawanda, Our Lady of Peace in Clarence, Saint Bernadette’s in Orchard Park, St. Aloysius Gonzaga in Cheektowaga and St. John XXIII in West Seneca.

The Bishops’ Conference of France this week said a dozen new accusers have come forth with allegations of abuse against deceased Capuchin priest Abbé Pierre.

The famed French priest has already been accused by several dozen people of inflicting abuse over the course of several decades. Pierre founded the Emmaus movement, an international charity effort, after World War II.

In a July 10 press release the French bishops said they were “shocked to receive the testimony of 12 new victims of Abbé Pierre, including 7 minors at the time of the events.”

The bishops “assure these people of their support,” the prelates said in the release.

The Rockford Diocese priest organized the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus in 1968 and was floated as a candidate for Archbishop of Washington.

The late Fr Herman A. Porter, an African-American Catholic priest who served in the Midwest and in 1968 organized the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, has been added to the Diocese of Rockford’s list of clergy credibly accused of child sex abuse.

The diocese released the updated list earlier this year, as noted in a February bulletin from one of Porter’s former parishes, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling, Illinois.

A French archbishop’s decision to promote a priest who was sentenced to jail for raping a teenage boy has drawn new condemnation of the Roman Catholic Church for its record on sex abuse.

Victim support groups and traditionalists have expressed outrage over the case of Dominique Spina, who was found guilty of raping a 16-year-old boy in 2006 and sentenced to five years in prison.

The archbishop of Toulouse, Guy de Kerimel, set off the controversy in June when he named Spina as diocesan chancellor, putting him in charge of archives.

SÃO PAULO – Lux Mundi Center, an office established by the Conference of Religious of Brazil and by the Bishops’ Conference, recently promoted a cycle of conferences with Father Hans Zollner, a major international expert on safeguarding, as part of its effort to educate priests and members of religious groups on abuse prevention in Brazil.

A former bishop in the Church in Wales is facing fresh allegations of historic sexual abuse, as a BBC investigation uncovers new claims against Anthony Pierce and another former clergyman.

Pierce, once Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, is currently serving four years in prison for indecent assaults on a child during his time as a parish priest in the 1980s.

A British Columbia father and son are suing the Anglican Church of Canada, alleging the son was conceived as a result of sexual abuse by a female employee of St. Michael’s Indian Residential School in Alert Bay in the late 1960s. 

The lawsuit says the father was 14 years old when he was victimized by a school supervisor in 1968, and he settled a lawsuit with the church in 2008 over the alleged sexual assault at the school on Cormorant Island, northeast of Vancouver Island.

One fall night in September 2023, Emma Misco arrived at her church in upstate New York to discover an unpleasant surprise.

On Monday — six years after a 9-year-old child came forward with sexual abuse allegations against a lay minister in an Illinois church — a long-awaited church trial will begin for Bishop Stewart Ruch, leader of the Anglican Church in North America’s Upper Midwest Diocese. Open only to those directly involved and the seven-member Court of a Trial of a Bishop, the proceeding will determine whether Ruch, an influential and charismatic figure, responded appropriately.

Ruch has admitted to making “regrettable errors” in the case. After learning of the allegations in 2019, Ruch took two years to initiate an investigation or even share the news with members of his diocese. Newsboys owner Wes Campbell dropped a bombshell Thursday by resigning from the Gospel Music Association (GMA) board over allegations that Newsboys Inc. covered up stories of sexual assault by former frontman Michael Tait.

He also hinted members of his own family were among those assaulted.

Campbell announced his resignation in a letter he sent to the GMA board, which then was leaked and posted by multiple people on Facebook. The Roys Report (TRR) has confirmed the letter’s authenticity with someone within the Newsboys organization.

Stating he is stepping down due to a “supposed coverup” regarding Tait, Campbell said that the impetus was a series of articles published last month detailing decades of alleged sexual assault and substance abuse.

Although he did not mention TRR by name, TRR broke the first story June 4, alleging Tait groomed and sexually assaulted three young men between 2005-2014.

Former members of the Golden Dawn Tabernacle Church are speaking out after their pastor, Isaac Noriega, was criminally charged for allegedly ignoring years of child abuse within the church.

News 4 Tucson’s sister station Telemundo Arizona spoke with two former church members, News 4 Tucson’s Chief Investigative Reporter Chorus Nylander spoke with another, who all describe a highly controlled environment in the church they believe contributed to the alleged abuse and silence about it.

Joanne Molina, a former member who attended the church for 42 years, expressed her disapproval of the situation.

“The situation is not a good one. It is far from Godly,” Molina said.
