[Note from BishopAccountability.org: We have corrected the spelling of Stadtfeld's name; it was misspelled in two different ways in this obituary.]

Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 27 at Immaculate Conception Church, Chicago, Ill., for Passionist Brother Joseph [Stadtfeld], 77, who died Aug. 23. He was a member of the Passionist Congregation for almost 59 years.

From 1951 to 1987, Brother [Stadtfeld] was stationed at Mater Dolorosa Monastery, Sierra Madre, as cook, tailor, gardener and in charge of maintenance work of the retreat grounds. For 10 years he helped in the construction of the outdoor Stations of the Cross and designed the extensive watering system that supplied all the vegetation.

Brother [Stadtfeld] was also well known in the Sierra Madre area, including the local police and fire departments, who showed up in force, with sirens wailing, to help celebrate his silver jubilee of religious life in 1969. His tenure at Mater Dolorosa was briefly interrupted by a two-year assignment (1966-68) at the Passionist Prep School in Warrenton, Mo.

A memorial Mass for Brother [Stadtfeld] will be celebrated Sept. 5, 7 p.m. at Mater Dolorosa.
