The chaplain at the state prison in Gardner has gone on personal sick leave following his indictment on charges of child rape and molestation, officials said Monday.

The Rev. Edward Nicewicz, 57, currently a Roman Catholic priest in the Worcester Diocese, faces three counts of indecent assault and battery on a child and one count of child rape.

The incidents are alleged to have occurred in Sutton last fall and involved girls 11 and 12 years old, said Worcester County Distict Attorney John J. Conte.

Nicewicz, indicted Friday, was chaplain at the prison for about two years and was assigned to the Sutton parish prior to that, said the Rev. John Barrett, spokesman for the diocese.
