The Rev. Lawrence Joseph Michaud, SM, a former pastor in Lawrence and Haverhill, died unexpectedly Friday in Van Buren, Maine. He was 80 years old.

A Marist priest, Father Michaud was born in Van Buren and at the age of 20 entered the Society of Mary. He was ordained at Marist College in Washington, D.C., in 1936.

He attended Wisdom School in St. Agatha, Maine, Sacred Heart School and Saint Mary's College in Van Buren, Maryvale Seminary in Bedford and Marist College.

Father Michaud had served five New England parishes as pastor: Sacred Heart in Lawrence, St. Joseph's in Haverhill; St. Charles' in Providence, R.I.; St. Remi in Van Buren and St. Joseph's in Hamlin, Maine.

He also served as parochial vicar in many of those parishes as well as at St. John the Baptist in Brunswick, Maine; Our Lady of Victories in Boston and St. Theresa's Parish in Methuen.

Since 1976 he has been a senior priest in residence at St. Bruno's Parish in Van Buren.

He leaves his sister, Cecile Violette of St. Leonard, New Brunswick, Canada, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be said at 3 p.m. tomorrow in St. Bruno's Church, Van Buren.
