Suit Accuses Priest of Sexual Abuse

St. Louis Post-Dispatch
July 2, 1994

A man using the alias John Doe filed suit Friday in circuit court in Belleville against the Rev. James Calhoun and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belleville, claiming that the man was sexually abused by Calhoun 14 or 15 years ago when the man was in his early teens.

The suit asks for more than $ 15,000 in compensation plus $ 1 million in punitive damages from each defendant.

Calhoun and three other priests from the Belleville Diocese have been permanently barred from the ministry over allegations of sexual abuse. The diocese announced only that the four priests had been found unfit.

The Rev. James Margason, vicar general of the diocese, said Friday that he was unaware of the suit and had no comment on it.

Calhoun could not be reached for comment
