The Roman Catholic Diocese here has placed a priest on administrative leave after a complaint of sexual abuse.

The Rev. Fernando Sayasaya, an assistant at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West Fargo, will remain on administrative leave while the allegation is being investigated.

Placing a priest on administrative leave is standard procedure when the diocese receives an allegation that falls under its sexual abuse policy, said the Rev. Robert Irwin, chancellor of the diocese. He would not be more specific about the allegation or who made it.

Church officials told parishioners about Sayasaya's leave last weekend.

He has been an assistant priest at Blessed Sacrament since July 1997, Irwin said.
