  R. Turnbull, Augustinian

The Rev. Robert A. Turnbull, 60, an Augustinian friar, died of heart problems Tuesday at St. Thomas Monastery, Villanova University.

Father Turnbull was born in Manoa and graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School in 1957. After high school, he entered the Augustinian Order. He graduated from Villanova University in 1962 and received a degree in theology at Augustinian College in Washington.

Father Turnbull was ordained to the priesthood at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church in Havertown on Nov. 6, 1965.

His first assignment was the Austin Preparatory School in Reading, Mass., where he taught physics and statistics. He also was the athletic director there.

In 1981, he was assigned to St. John Neumann High School in Naples, Fla. In 1984, he went to St. Genevieve parish in Flourtown, and then, for two years, he administered a parish in Saint Lucia, West Indies.

In 1996, Father Turnbull, in failing health, moved to St. Augustine Friary in Villanova and later to St. Thomas Monastery.

Father Turnbull is survived by a sister, Jean Turnbull, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at 7 tonight at St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church on the campus of Villanova University, Montgomery Avenue. A Mass will be said there at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
