Salesian Society Defends Transfer of Priest

Business Wire
April 6, 2002

Seth Taube of McCarter and English LLP, attorneys for the Salesian Society of Don Bosco, Eastern Province, stated today:

Allegations have been made that the Province removed Father Carlos Peralta from Chicago in 1999 to prevent his prosecution after accusations of sexual misconduct with minors were made against him. I believe the clear evidence will show as follows:

First, that the Province had no knowledge of any prior misconduct by Father Carlos at the time he was placed in Chicago. Upon learning of accusations of misconduct in Chicago, Father Carlos was promptly removed from the Parish, pursuant to the Province's policy, to remove him from unsupervised access to children. The Province does not have facilities in Illinois without youth activities.

Father Carlos was then placed in a New Jersey Province facility for approximately one year with no unsupervised access to children, during which time the police did not request the Province to make him available. At the end of his term with the Province, Father Carlos was returned to the control of his home Province with the continuing understanding he should have no unsupervised access to children.
