A priest accused of fondling a 16-year-old boy in the rectory of an upper Manhattan church admitted the act to police and apologized for it, a prosecutor said yesterday.

After his arrest about midnight Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Karen Friedman-Agnifilo said, the Rev. Jorge Pintado told detectives twice that he touched the boy "to gratify his sexual desires" and that he was sorry he did so.

Pintado's lawyer, James Harris, disputed charges that his client intentionally fondled the boy at Good Shepherd Church in Inwood.

Harris said there is "a certain amount of physicality involved" in the Ecuadoran church, and "embracing is not out of the ordinary."

Pintado, who is from Ecuador, was released without bail after Criminal Court Judge Matthew Cooper warned him to stay away from the teenager.
