4 More Sue Ex-Priest on Charges of Sex Abuse

Chicago Tribune
August 20, 2003

Four more men who say they were sexually abused as boys in the late 1960s and 1970s by a Chicago priest filed suit Tuesday, raising similar allegations as two men who sued him in February.

The lawsuit alleges that John D. Murphy abused the boys while he was a priest at St. Rita Church on the Southwest Side. Murphy, who left the priesthood in 1993, was a member of the Order of St. Augustine.

The order's Midwest Province issued a statement Tuesday saying it takes "the issues of sexual misconduct very seriously" and prays for those affected by it.

Marc Pearlman, one of the lawyers representing the men in both cases, said the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago was not named as a defendant because it is involved in negotiations to settle victims' claims against it.
