Court Upholds Sentence in Sex Assault

HARTFORD (AP) -- The state Appellate Court has upheld the sexual assault conviction of a seminary student for fondling a 16-year-old Bridgeport girl.

Leonardo Montoya was convicted in 2005 of fourth-degree sexual assault and sentenced to 90 days in prison. He was also ordered to undergo sex offender treatment and have no unsupervised contact with children.

In his appeal, Montoya argued there was not enough evidence to support his conviction. He also claims he was denied a fair trial because of prosecutorial impropriety.

The appeals court, in a ruling released Wednesday, rejected Montoya's arguments.

Montoya was formerly assigned to St. Augustine's Cathedral in Bridgeport and other churches in Trumbull and Norwalk. Authorities say he met the girl's family through the church and molested her at her home in 2003.
