Rev. Roger P. Schoenhofen, OMI, born Jan. 3, 1941, in Belleville, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at St. John's Mercy Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.

The Schoenhofen family moved to Wood River where Roger attended grade school and then made his high school and junior college at St. Henry's Seminary, Belleville, Ill. He began preparation for religious life at the Oblate novitiate in Godfrey, Ill., where he made his first profession in 1961. His philosophy studies were at the Oblate Scholasticate in Pass Christian, Miss., and his theological studies were at Oblate School of the Southwest, San Antonio, Texas. He was ordained priest by Bishop Albert Zuroweste. He died in the 48th year of religious life and the 43rd of priesthood.

Fr. Schoenhofen's first assignment was to St. Henry's Seminary, Belleville, Ill., where he taught English, coached speech, and directed school plays. He interrupted his teaching to assist at West End Parish, Duluth, Minn. He continued his interest in youth ministry by forming the Oblate Youth Mission Team which conducted retreats for young people mainly around the Midwest. That led to his work at King's House of Retreats, Belleville, Ill., before he became pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul, Alton, Ill., where he served for the last eleven years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Ruth, nee Erhardt, Schoenhofen; and his brother, Dale Schoenhofen.

Surviving are his sister-in-law, Tina, nee Miller, Schoenhofen, a nephew, Douglas Schoenhofen, and a niece, Jennifer (Bill) Ramsey, all of Lisle, Ill.; and a cousin, Steve (Jo) Krummrich of Arnold, Mo.

Visitation: Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton, Ill., with Bishop George Lucas officiating. Burial will follow at Oblate Cemetery in Belleville, Ill.
