COVENTRY -- For the second time in eight years, a former middle school teacher and church deacon has been accused of trying to solicit an underage girl over the Internet.

And, again, Edward J. Sadowski Jr. has been caught in the same manner -- because the girl he thought he was chatting with was actually a police officer, authorities say.

Sadowski, 67, was arraigned Monday in District Court, Providence, on charges of possessing child pornography and being a fugitive from justice in Virginia.

The investigation began with the Stafford County (Va.) Sheriff s Office, where an undercover officer posing online as a 13-year-old girl was contacted by Sadowski, according to Rhode Island State Police Capt. David Neill. Stafford County authorities have charged Sadowski with 54 counts of transmission of child pornography and indecent solicitation of a minor.

Earlier this month, Stafford County authorities contacted the Rhode Island State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force for help in identifying a man with the screen name of Pappyyokum, whom they d traced to Rhode Island.

On Friday, the investigators in the task force, Coventry police and the U.S. Marshals Service, searched Sadowski s residence at 452 Shady Valley Rd. and found child pornography on his computers and other digital media, according to the state police. Sadowski was arrested and has been held without bail since Friday as a fugitive from justice.

Sadowski had recently completed five years of probation and served two years in prison, after pleading guilty in 2002 to attempted statutory rape and sending child pornography over the Internet.

He had caught the attention of the Massachusetts State Police in 2001 when he tried to arrange a tryst with a 14-year-old girl at a motel in Watertown. His plans fell apart when the underage girl he d met online was revealed to be an undercover state trooper. Sadowski had sent the trooper pornographic images, including nude pictures of himself.

At the time, Sadowski was no longer teaching at the Coventry Middle School, but he was a lay deacon at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

His arrest ended his ministry with the Catholic Church. Sadowski has been suspended since 2001 and prohibited from performing any ministry associated with the Catholic Church in Rhode Island, according to Michael K. Guilfoyle, director of communication for the Diocese of Providence.

With the recent completion of Sadowski s probation, the matter was being referred to the Vatican for review, Guilfoyle said.
