Father John was born on March 23, 1947 in Saint Michael's Hospital, in Newark, New Jersey. Father is the fourth of five children born to Philip P. and Eileen L. (McCann) Laferrera (both deceased). His brothers and sisters are Philip P. who is married to Patricia (Brennan). They reside in Colonia, New Jersey. Father's next sibling is Judith, who resides in East Orange and is The Assistant Registrar at Seton Hall University. Father's other sister is Joan who resides in Readington with her husband, John Albanese. Father's other brother is Father Robert G. Laferrera, who is the Administrator of Holy Trinity Parish in Hackensack. Father Bob is also the Chair of the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission.

Father John was educated at Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Grammar School in East Orange and Essex Catholic High School then located in Newark, New Jersey. He received his B.A. degree from Seton Hall University , South Orange in 1969 and his M.Div. degree from Immaculate Conception Seminary in 1977.

Father John was ordained on May 26, 1973 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Newark, by the Most Rev. Thomas A. Boland, of happy memory. His first assignment was to Immaculate Conception Church, Newark who he served for 14 years. His next assignment was to Saint Francis Xavier Church, also in Newark, where he ministered from June of 1987 to January of 1991. On January 31, 1991, Father was named the Administrator of Saint Aloysius Church, Caldwell. Father John was named Pastor of Saint Aloysius Church on April 13, 1992 by the Most Rev. Theodore E. McCarrick and was installed as Pastor on June 21, 1992 (the Feast of Saint Aloysius ) by the Most Rev. Joseph A. Francis, of happy memory. Father John was formally appointed to a second six year term as Pastor of Saint Aloysius Parish on April 7, 1998 (Holy Thursday) by the Most Rev. Theodore E. McCarrick. On April 30, 2004, he received his notification of his appointment a pastor of the Church of St. Philomena, Livingston. On July 1, 2004, he assumed that Pastorate.

In June 2009, His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, honored our Pastor as Chaplain to His Holiness with the title of Reverend Monsignor John LaFerrera..
