Law Deposition Continues in Shanley Case

Associated Press
February 3, 2003

BOSTON (AP) Cardinal Bernard Law answered more questions Monday in the civil case involving the Rev. Paul Shanley.

Law resumed his testimony in a deposition by lawyers for Shanley's alleged victims.

Law resigned as archbishop of Boston in December after nearly a year of allegations that top church officials transferred priests accused of molesting children to other parishes.

Law has already testified for several days in the Shanley deposition. He was last questioned Jan. 22.

In lawsuits filed against the archdiocese, Shanley's alleged victims accuse Law and other top church officials of negligence for failing to remove Shanley from parish ministry after they received allegations about him.

Lawyers for Law tried unsuccessfully to delay the deposition until after a state grand jury concludes its criminal probe into the scandal. Law is scheduled to testify before the grand jury on Feb. 25.

Superior Court Judge Constance Sweeney turned down that request and sharply rebuked the church attorneys for repeated delays.

Lawyers for the alleged victims planned to file an affidavit Monday itemizing the costs spent on responding to the request to delay Law's deposition.
