Bill Aids Prosecutors in Sex-Abuse Cases

Orange County Register [San Bernardino CA]
Downloaded April 4, 2003

LOS ANGELES - Rushing to prevent 19 potential cases against Los Angeles priests from expiring, Gov. Gray Davis signed legislation Thursday to give county prosecutors more time to press charges.

Davis signed the bill after the Senate passed it 37-0.

Prosecutors, who have one year to press charges after receiving accusations of child sexual abuse, said attorneys for Los Angeles priest suspects are running out the clock by challenging their attempts to gather evidence. The bill stops the clock from running while judges consider the challenges.

The bill stops 10 potential cases from expiring in April, six in May and three more in June. Authorities are investigating 50 to 100 more cases.

Diocese says Boston officials should pay

SAN BERNARDINO – The Catholic diocese here has demanded that Boston church officials pay damages that might be awarded a man who says he was molested by a priest transferred from Boston in the 1990s.

San Bernardino church officials say the Archdiocese of Boston assured them the Rev. Paul Shanley was in good standing when he transferred. Documents have since shown that Boston officials knew of allegations about Shanley dating to the 1960s and knew he advocated sex between men and boys.

He is charged with raping four boys in Newton, Mass. A suit filed in January accuses him of having sex with a 17-year-old boy in San Bernardino and of persuading him to have sex with other men.
