ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Archbishop Justin Rigali has approved a revised sexual abuse policy for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, church officials said Friday.

Revisions include a provision for addressing sexual abuse alleged against church personnel other than clergy. It includes the appointment of a review team when an allegation is brought forward to investigate and gather facts.

Rigali said the policy is evidence of the church's unwaivering commitment to protecting children and safeguarding the rights of the accused.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops set a deadline of June 1 for all U.S. dioceses to have a sexual abuse policy in place that conformed with specific Vatican and conference documents and church law.

Rigali approved the policy May 22 and issued it to clergy May 29.
