	New Judge Named to Oversee LA Clergy Settlement KESQ [Los Angeles CA] Downloaded February 17, 2005 LOS ANGELES A new judge has been named to oversee the settlement of more than 500 clergy abuse cases against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter Lichtman will be replaced by Judge Charles "Tim" McCoy because insurance carriers for the church objected to his handling of the case. Lichtman has presided over settlement talks in Los Angeles for more than two years. He played a key role in negotiating a recent record-breaking 100 (m) million dollar settlement with alleged clergy abuse victims in the Diocese of Orange. The change in judges comes about three weeks after insurance carriers sued the archdiocese, alleging that it has withheld information that could help them assess the validity and worth of hundreds of sexual abuse claims.
