Disgraced Priest Blamed for Youth's Suicide

ABC [Australia]
May 2, 2005

The Criminal Court in Hobart has heard a Tasmanian woman blames a disgraced former Anglican priest for the suicide of her son.

Louis Victor Daniels today admitted to molesting the woman's son in the 1980s.

Daniels admitted to molesting 10 teenaged boys over a 20-year period.

In court today, he pleaded guilty to 13 charges including maintaining a sexual relationship with a young person, indecent assault and attempted indecent assault.

The court heard several victims were either involved in church youth groups or were working with the church, and that Daniels molested one youth after he had performed a church service in northern Tasmania.

The prosecution told the court Daniels had told one youth he would try training him to be a good kisser.

The court heard he forced another youth to perform oral sex on him, telling the youth how much he cared for him, and that what he was doing was an expression of love.

Prosecutor Mike Stoddart said one of Daniels' victims had killed himself late last year, and that the youth's mother blamed Daniels.

Mr Stoddart said one youth had been sent to Tasmania from Queensland by another convicted paedophile - a former associate of Daniels.

Daniels was remanded in custody and the sentencing hearing will continue tomorrow.
