A Catholic priest alleges in a lawsuit that the head of the New York Catholic Diocese, Cardinal Edward Egan, is himself secretly homosexual and involved in a pedophilia cover-up in the Church.

The New Jersey priest claims that Egan is “actively homosexual,” and that he “has personal knowledge of this,” despite the Cardinal’s public anti-gay stance. Two other senior Catholics in the region are also accused of being actively homosexual. The suit notes that this behaviour is "consensual, adult private sexual behavior by these defendants," differentiating it with the more sinister allegations that these Church officials are involved in protecting clergy accused of pedophilia, and covering up evidence of it.

The priest claims that Cardinal Egan and his other gay senior colleagues are so afraid of being publicly outed, that they are refusing to turn over pedophile priests, saying that their closeted homosexuality and public hypocrisy "has compromised defendants' ability to supervise and control predators.”

Currently suspended from chaplaincy in what he alleges is retaliation for being a whistleblower, the priest is suing Egan and nine other Catholic officials and institutions, claiming a pattern of "retaliation and harassment" after an alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in New York’s Catholic diocese.
