Cornwall Public Inquiry Announces Advisory Panel CNW [Canada] July 26, 2006 http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/July2006/26/c9467.html CORNWALL, ON, July 26 /CNW Telbec/ - Justice G. Normand Glaude, Commissioner of the Cornwall Public Inquiry, today announced the appointment of the members of the Cornwall Inquiry Advisory Panel. The panel will play an important role in the Inquiry's Phase 2 mandate to foster a healing environment for the Cornwall community. Panel members will work with Inquiry staff to: ensure a strong research agenda supportive of the Inquiry's work; give thorough consideration of policy issues and options in a holistic, multi-disciplinary environment; and provide opportunities for public and professional input germane to Phase 2 recommendations and activities. As the activities in Phase 2 will generally occur outside the formal hearing processes, some panel members will be active in reaching out to communities within Cornwall to understand the community's perspective on its needs. Panel members expect to consult with those who have experienced childhood sexual abuse as well as with community professionals in order to find ways to optimize positive opportunities in the areas of healing and reconciliation for the future. The Advisory Panel includes the following exceptional individuals: Michael Church, mentor for those who have experienced sexual abuse; Janet Handy, Executive Director of the Gatehouse, a unique response centre for those whose lives have been impacted by child abuse; Dr. Benjamin Hoffman, a specialist in consensus-building, negotiation and dispute resolution; Dr. Peter Jaffe, a professor and clinical psychologist specializing in child sexual abuse; Gail Kaneb, Cornwall businesswoman and active community volunteer, Father John Allan Loftus, a psychologist, professor and Jesuit priest; and Philip Murray, former Commissioner of the RCMP and Member of the Ipperwash Inquiry Advisory Panel. In creating the Advisory Panel, and guided by the Commission's Policy Director, Colleen Parrish, the Commission undertook an extensive process to ensure broad participation in the selection of panel members and the finalization of the Advisory Panel's Terms of Reference. Parties were asked for their suggestions and public contributions were solicited from the Inquiry's website. Following a careful review of all suggestions, the panel members who were selected represent a variety of backgrounds relevant to the Phase 2 work of the Inquiry including, child sexual abuse, healing, mediation, institutional and community responses and the Cornwall community itself. Each of these individuals has expressed an interest in this important work, making time in their own busy lives to continue to make a public contribution. MICHAEL CHURCH, FREELTON. Mike is an active volunteer on behalf of men
who have suffered sexual abuse. His work has included providing peer support
as a trained mentor and speaking about the impact of sexual abuse to meetings
of police forces, hospital staff, schools and service clubs. He has been a
keynote speaker or workshop participant at Ontario conferences of male
survivors and has also advocated for change on behalf of those who have
experienced childhood or adolescent sexual abuse. He has found that raising
awareness has aided professionals in recognizing symptoms of childhood abuse
and supported men who have experienced abuse but thought they were alone. Mike
retired in December 2005, after over forty years of progressively responsible
working experience, both at a major Canadian bank and in the Ontario
Government. Mike is proud to indicate that he recently celebrated his 39th
wedding anniversary.ADVISORY PANEL BIOGRAPHIES JANET HANDY, TORONTO. Jan is the Executive Director of the Gatehouse(R) Child Abuse Investigation and Support Site, a unique response centre for people whose lives have been directly impacted by child abuse, providing services for the investigation, trauma, survival and recovery of childhood sexual abuse. In carrying out her mandate, Jan works with both child welfare and police representatives and provides child, family and adult support services. Jan has been integral to the development of training manuals and curriculum components of The Gatehouse Adult Support Network(TM), a program offering an extensive education and community support network for adults who have experienced child abuse. Jan has her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wilfred Laurier, her Master of Divinity from Trinity College, University of Toronto, and her Master of Education from O.I.S.E. She has made many presentations and acted as a professional development trainer in several venues such as The Anglican Church of Canada, Children's Aid Societies, and early childhood educators. Jan is also the founder of the Family Action Network, a group that subsequently formed a housing corporation for those in need of housing due to special needs or family violence. DR. BENJAMIN HOFFMAN, EGANVILLE. Ben is a specialist in consensus-building, negotiation and dispute resolution. From 2000 to 2003, he was the Director of the Conflict Resolution Program at The Carter Center, acting as President Carter's representative to mediate peace agreements. Ben obtained his B.A. and M.A. (Community Psychology) from Wilfred Laurier University, an M.A. in International Relations from Tufts University, and also a Ph.D. in Architecture from York University. He specialized in International Peacemaking at the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation. Ben has worked in healing and restorative justice issues over the last twenty years, and from 1976-1981 was the Deputy Regional Director of Operations at the Ontario Ministry of Correctional Services in Northern Ontario. Ben focuses on mediating complex, multi-stakeholder disputes and on peace-building initiatives. He is currently active in violence prevention and reconciliation in Guinea-Bissau. DR. PETER JAFFE, LONDON. Peter is a Professor and Academic Director of the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children at the University of Western Ontario. As a clinical psychologist, he has extensive experience working with child sexual abuse victims and a substantial research and teaching background. Peter received his undergraduate degree from McGill University and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Western Ontario. He has served on the Canadian Panel on Violence against Women, acted as a consultant to Justice Robins in his review to identify and prevent sexual misconduct in Ontario schools, and reviewed the impact of institutional abuse on children and adolescents for the Law Commission of Canada. Peter has co-authored numerous books and articles. He sits on the Chief Coroner's Domestic Violence Death Review Committee and has served on various community advisory committees for the London Police Service. Peter has also served his community on the Thames Valley District School Board as both a Trustee and Chair. GAIL GUSTIN KANEB, CORNWALL. Gail is a successful businesswoman and active community leader and philanthropist. She is also a certified Shadow Work(R) coach, and does extensive work with the Young Presidents Organization. She is a change catalyst, helping people and companies reach their full potential by leading them to address areas where they block themselves. As President of Breakthrough Strategies, Gail shares leadership, communication and conflict management strategies used in her own business as well as her family life as a spouse and parent of three. Gail has founded and sat on numerous community boards and she and her husband Tom were co-chairs of the "Our Hospital, Our Future" fundraising campaign, which exceeded the $12 million goal set for the Cornwall Hospital. In 2005, Gail and Tom received honourary diplomas from St. Lawrence College for their work in the Cornwall community and with hundreds of College graduates, and for their contribution to the important work of the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Science. FATHER JOHN ALLAN LOFTUS, BOSTON. Known as J.A., to friends, Father Loftus is a psychologist and Jesuit priest, the Director of the Jesuit Urban Center in Boston, and an adjunct professor of psychology and the psychology of religion at Boston College. J.A. received his A.B. and M.A. from Fordham University, his M.Div. (Theology) from Woodstock College, N.Y., and completed his Ph.D. in psychology at Boston University. He is the former President of Regis College, University of Toronto. Prior to coming to Regis in 1988, J.A. held the John J. Wintermeyer Chair in the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo, St. Jerome's College. From 1986 to 1994, J.A. was the Executive and Clinical Director of Southdown, the Catholic Church's large psychiatric treatment facility for clergy and Religious, located in Aurora. From 1990 to 1992, J.A. was a consultant to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) in relation to the report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Child Sexual Abuse: "From Pain to Hope". J.A. has written and lectured widely on the issue of sexual abuse in the Church. He is a dual Canadian/American citizen. PHILIP MURRAY, OTTAWA. Phil was Commissioner of the RCMP between 1994 and 2000, retiring in September 2000. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and Certificate in Personnel Administration from the University of Regina, Saskatchewan. He is a graduate of the Canadian Police College Advanced Police Studies Program, and a graduate of the United States FBI National Executive Institute. Phil served with the RCMP for 38 years, experiencing a broad range of operational policing and management responsibilities, progressing from a uniformed peace officer to the most senior position of RCMP Commissioner. Phil has been serving as a member of the Research Advisory Committee for the Ipperwash Public Inquiry. He also serves his community as a member of the Board of the Ottawa Hospital and as Honorary Patron for the RCMP Heritage Centre, Regina, Saskatchewan.
