Two daughters of the Summerstrand pastor facing a charge of raping his adoptive daughter, testified yesterday that they discovered secret videotapes in their father's study showing their adoptive sister naked in the bath.

Earlier in the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday, one of the daughters also read out a love letter she had found torn up in a plastic bag three weeks after her father's arrest.

The letter is a passionate plea to the teenage adoptive daughter to come back to him after she left him for a young boyfriend.

The daughters, who may not be named, testified that they had found two holes in the ceiling of their bathroom before finding two video cameras in the ceiling. They followed the wires to their father's study, where they found video tapes.

One of the daughters said they had watched one of the videos and seen images of their young adoptive sister naked in the bath. They decided to tell their mother about it, but not the sister.

Later, after confronting their father about it during a family meeting, it was decided to "close the book" on the matter on condition that he went for psychiatric help. She was not sure if this had happened.

The 54-year-old pastor, who is in custody, is charged with the rape, between 2003 and 2005, of his adopted child while she was between the ages of 15 and 17. He is also accused of indecent assault involving sodomy and the use of sex toys on the teenager, as well as crimen injuria for spying on the teenager and his own daughters in the bath.

The youngest daughter, visibly shaking during her testimony, said although they had already discovered the video tapes in 2002, she had not known that her father had a sexual relationship with her adoptive sister until she walked into his room in January last year and found the two sleeping together in a compromising position. This caused a major upset in the family because she informed her mother about what she had seen.

In the love letter to the young girl read out in court, the pastor pleads with her not to leave him. "I will die. I cannot live if you are not in love with me. I love you. Let me know the truth please," he pleaded.

The pastor was arrested on May 18 last year after the adopted daughter reported the alleged abuse to her boyfriend, who reported it to the police.

The police found several vibrators, pornographic videos, a disc containing pornographic material, condoms and drugs in his house.

The pastor has pleaded not guilty to rape and other charges, but guilty to incest.
