A Congregation has been left stunned after its vicar resigned over a second affair.

The first the Rev Adrian Davies' parishioners knew of his disappearance was when he failed to turn up for a service earlier this month at St Matthew's Church in Borth, near Aberystwyth.

Instead, the Bishop of St Davids, Carl Cooper, presided at a service on September 3 for the whole parish of Borth and Eglwysfach with Llangynfelin, where he announced the vicar's resignation and explained the reason for it.

He told the congregation Mr Davies had "separated from his wife and has formed an inappropriate relationship with another woman".

And the Church In Wales this week confirmed he had resigned.

The Rev Mandy Williams-Potter, communications officer to the Bishop of St Davids, said Mr Davies first had an affair with the woman in 2003, when he was the vicar of Lamphey, in Pembrokeshire.

"The bishop offered him an alternative parish so he could make a go of his marriage."

Ms Williams-Potter said Mr Williams' wife still resides at the vicarage.

"We are certainly not in any rush to ask her to leave," said Ms Williams-Potter.

"She has been offered support from local clergy, as well as the bishop, and as a church we will do all we can to help her in that move."

In a statement yesterday, Bishop Cooper said, "First and foremost my concern is for the individuals and parishes involved. This is a very sad and difficult situation.

"We, as a diocese, take seriously the moral standards to be maintained by all clergy and I have accepted the Rev Adrian Davies's resignation."
