Blacksburg Police Investigate Retired Teacher

Blacksburg Police have started their own investigation into a retired middle school teacher. Sixty-five-year-old Jonathan Utin was arrested this week on a felony charge that he inappropriately touched a 12-year-old girl in Middletown Ohio.

Utin was a widely-known and liked math and science teacher at Blacksburg Middle School for more than 30 years. He also managed the Shawnee Swim Club in Blacksburg for 28 years and volunteered as a Sunday school teacher at Christ Episcopal Church.

Blacksburg Police searched his home on Tuesday taking several items including two computers, photos albums, notes and letters and school yearbooks. Blacksburg Police are investigating allegations from other people and expect to file local charges in the next few weeks.

Utin appeared briefly in Middletown Municipal Court this morning. Ohio authorities told the court Utin "repeatedly had sex" with a young girl during Utin's visits with the girl's family at Christmas and at other times.

Though he's charged with sexually molesting a 12-year-old girl in December of 2001, the detective also testified about Utin's sexual contact with a girl between the time the victim was five and nine. The prosecutor asked the court to set bond at $500,000.
