Florida/ Malta (di-ve news) -- October 19, 2006 -- 1800CEST -- A Gozitan priest who used to live in the USA has admitted to having had an inappropriate relationship with former Republican Congressman Mark Foley in the 1960s, an American newspaper claimed on Wednesday.

Florida-based newspaper Sarasota Herald-Tribune claimed the priest said the relationship included massaging Foley, who at the time was a 13-year-old boy, while he was naked and lying naked in the same room on overnight trips, although he did not specifically remember having sex.

In its report, the newspaper went on to quote the Gozitan priest saying that he was going through a nervous breakdown at the time and that the pills and tranquillizers that he used to take continuously had affected his mind a little bit.

The name of the priest was shared with state prosecutors on Wednesday as part of ongoing investigations on Foley, who resigned last month from Congress in the wake of the scandal that broke out after the surfacing of sexually explicit emails that he had sent to young male pages.

Shortly after his resignation, his lawyer had revealed that Foley had been molested as a boy, although he later pointed out that his client did not blame the trauma for his totally inappropriate emails and instant messages.
