Roman Catholic church officials in Maine announce that a retired priest has been temporarily removed from ministry following a complaint of sexual abuse of a minor that allegedly occurred in the early 1980s in Massachusetts.

At the time, the Rev. Maurice Lebel was a member of the Society of Jesus, Portland diocesan officials said.

In a statement from the Portland diocese, officials said that in March a report was received by the Archdiocese of Boston and that Massachusetts civil authorities and the Diocese of Portland were notified.

In June, the Portland Diocese received more details about the complaint and began its own investigation.

Church official said they were asked by Massachusetts authorities not to comment publicly until now.
