FBI agents in New Jersey arrested a former priest Wednesday who is currently a teacher and coach at a Burlington County middle school on federal charges of possessing and distributing child pornography, law enforcement sources told WNBC.com.

Joseph E. Macanga was arrested at his Lumberton home Wednesday. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Trenton, law enforcement sources told News 4 New York.

According to court documents, investigators from the FBI's Innocent Images initiative, which targets individuals suspected of being involved in online sexual exploitation of children, identified Macanga as a participant in an Internet chatroom.

During an interview with FBI agents, Macanga consented to a search of his computer. More than 300 images of child pornography were discovered on his hard drive, officials said.

An examination of Macanga's hard drive also revealed his participation in almost 30 chatrooms whose names indicated they were attended by pedophiles, court papers indicated.

In interviews on April 14th and April 17th, Macanga admitted to FBI agents that he had received a few hundred images over the Internet depicting child pornography, had sent images of child pornography out over the Internet and that he knew the possession of such images is illegal.
