Bell Ringer Jailed for Sex Abuse

September 26, 2008

A Dunedin man was today jailed today for seven and half years for sexually abusing a schoolgirl in the 1980s.

David Hockley, 68, a Master of the Bells at First Church in Dunedin, was told by Justice Christine French in the High Court in Dunedin that the harm he had done was incalculable.

Hockley earlier admitted five charges representing repeated and prolonged sexual offending against the girl.

The court was told he first raped her when she was aged 13 and subjected her to regular indecencies _ as often as six times a week _ over the next five years.

He abused her at First Church when taking her for bellringing lessons, and made her watch pornography featuring bestiality.

The victim, now in her 30s, complained to police last year after undergoing years of counselling.
