Former Area Catholic Priest Barred from Ministry

October 13, 2008

A retired Fostoria and Columbus Grove Catholic priest has been barred from ministry for a credible allegation of sexual abuse.

The Toledo diocese says the Reverend Lawrence Varney was accused of sexual misconduct with a minor almost 30 years ago.

Varney had been an instructor at Toledo's Central Catholic High School at the time the alleged abuse occurred. A spokesperson said the case is just now coming to light because a victim recently came forward.

The Diocesan Review Board deemed the allegation to be credible.

Bishop Leonard Blair placed Varney on administrative leave and barred him from public ministry in compliance with diocesan policy.

Varney served as Assistant Pastor at St. Wendelin in Fostoria and St. Anthony in Columbus Grove in the 1960's.
